19 - 20 JULY 2002 'THE SUMMER SHIFT' Performances @ The Castle Theatre, St. Michael's Close, Aberystwyth Join us for two outstanding international companies visiting Wales for the first time as part of the CPR international summer school, The Summer Shift. Friday 19 July, 8pm Daksha Sheth Dance Company (India) BHUKHAM (Circus of Earth & Sky) Daksha Sheth's company from Kerala is considered the most radical and visionary contemporary dance company in India. Daksha Sheth is a classically trained Kathak dancer, who has researched the martial art forms of Kalarippayattu and Chhau. She has trained her dancers in forms of yoga, gymnastics and Mallakhamb. Bhukham (Circus of Earth and Sky) explores the gymnastic traditions of Mallakhamb (from Haharastra, West India) and involves breathtaking aerial and rope skills alongside a new slant on Kathak. "Bhukham is an incredible celebration of the human form. It is an expression of how far we can push ourselves towards excellence.awe inspiring suspended forms float about, almost playing with the concept of space. Bhukham brings all the mystery, magic, physicality, risk and excitement of circus to dance." Mid-Day, Mumbai "Here indeed are all the elements of the circus that we have loved as children with an almost atavistic relish: the thrill of anticipation, the sharp intake of breath at the sense of danger, the daring, the riveting physical skill, and the lingering feelings of awe at witnessing the human body pushing at the very limits of its endurance."
