Aberystwyth writers stage evening of short plays chosen by audience. |
Aberystwyth writers bring their latest work to the stage for an evening of short plays set in Aberystwyth exploring the impact of death, immigration and infidelity on relationships at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 27th and 28th November. Playpen – 3 shorts is the culmination of over three years of developing writers and producing showcases of script-in-hand writing in development at Aberystwyth Arts Centre including Beginnings, an evening of short plays, the sell-out Town with No Traffic Wardens which was a collaboratively project exploring news in a small town, PlayPen – 9 writers, which allowed the writers to write 20 minutes plays on any subject and face the audience vote and their most recent project EarCandy which presented 12 short audio plays by 13 writers from a web-platform. In addition the group participate in a regular scratch night Crash Test which has allowed writers from a variety of text-based background to develop work including short plays, storytelling, spoken word and the first stand-up comedy appearance of writers group member Julie Grady-Thomas. The writers’ group was created in 2011 is led by Sandra Bendelow who’s short monologue, One Hour and Forty Five Minutes written as part of Dirty Protest Theatre’s play-in-a-bag project was selected to be part of Surprise Theatre Night at the Royal Court Theatre earlier this year. Her play ‘Split’ is one of the winning short plays which will be presented as part of PlayPen shorts. Sandra Bendelow who runs the group said “The Writing for Performance Group always looks to set itself new challenges which will develop the writers. Writing for Performance is about just that – performance, not writing for the stage and I’ve always believed we needed to share work with audiences. The first Playpen evening presented 9 plays to the audience and let the audience choose which plays they thought should be fully staged. It’s really exciting for not just the writers whose plays won the audience vote but all the writers because they’ve all been involved in developing the plays and they now get to see what happens when all the elements of theatre are brought together. So far we’ve done showcases of script-in-hand work in development but this is it – this is the finished produced with sound and lighting and full sets. The four plays chosen by the audience were Split, Cookhouse, Not Quite Yet along with Grave Men Near Death which is on its only very special journey as we decided the redeveloped play was so interesting with new characters we decided it needed to be a full-length play and it will be produced next year. Playpen – 3 shorts will be a great evening with 3 starkly different plays in subject and style. Interestingly each of them is about a relationship but very different relationships and stories. We’re really excited about sharing them with an audience.” To book contact Aberystwyth Arts Centre ticket office on 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre |
