The Drowned World by Gary Owen at the Traverse

Multi Fringe First Award Winners and masters of new writing, Paines Plough return to the Traverse with a new play by Gary Owen, directed by Vicky Featherstone. THE DROWNED WORLD opens on the 2nd August with a press performance at 12pm.

"And that is why we can't have these fatally radiant creatures
Walking round the place..
Reminding us how clumsy, and mean-spirited, and graceless, and cowardly
and shapeless, and flabby, and foul we all are."

In a land where the ethnic cleansing of the beautiful is almost at an end, where physical perfection is destroying the nation's moral will and society's sense of well-being is decaying through 'radiance' poisoning, Tara and Julian are waiting for the order to come - these people must die.

On the run from the squad, Darren shelters the couple, believing Tara is the angel sent to save him. As Kelly, the enforcer of the order draws closer, she entices him to denounce the runaways they both loathe but secretly covet, forcing Darren to resort to violent measures to ensure his saviour is safe.

Gary Owen creates a nihilistic new world where the imperfect, once spurned have taken control, where suburbia is sick and attraction is ultimately fatal.

THE DROWNED WORLD is directed by Vicky Featherstone, designed by Neil Warmington, lighting designed by Natasha Chivers and sound by Nick Powell. The full cast is Josephine Butler (Lawless Heart), Theo Fraser Steele (Before You Go), Neil McKinlen and Eileen Walsh

Artistic Director of Paines Plough, Vicky Featherstone is one of the most inspired and inspiring directors of her generation and a passionate producer of new work.

"one of the most acute judges of new plays and a fearless director " The Guardian

Her productions for Paines Plough include; last year's Tiny Dynamite by Abi Morgan (winner of MEN Best Fringe Production), Crazy Gary's Mobile Disco by Gary Owen (winner of Welsh Theatre Award for Best New Play), Splendour by Abi Morgan (winner of a Fringe First and Herald Angel award and Barclays Theatre Awards for Best Director and Best Play), Riddance by Linda McLean (winner of a Fringe First and Herald Angel), The Cosmonaut's Last Message To The Woman He Once Loved In The Former Soviet Union by David Greig and Crave by Sarah Kane.

This is Gary Owen's third play: Previously for Paines Plough with Sgript Cymru - Crazy Gary's Mobile Disco and most recently Shadow of a Boy for The National Theatre. He was writer in residence at Paines Plough during 2001.

"a blazing new talen..Owen writes like an angel with a foul mouth" The Guardian

Paines Plough are returning to the Traverse with their second production this year, following Douglas Maxwell's hit show Helmet - a co-production with Traverse Theatre Company. During the festival, in association with Graeae Theatre, Paines Plough will be presenting a week of fully accessible performances with sign language interpretation and audio description for each performance.
