The Riverfront Pantomime tickets selling faster than ever before! |
The Riverfront’s traditional family pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, opened on Tuesday 3 December boasting the theatre’s best ever record of advanced sales and reserves. With over 20,000 sales and reserves recorded before the curtain rose on Tuesday, The Riverfront has exceeded its previous record by some 10%. A reflection of the high quality pantomime tradition that The Riverfront has established over the past 9 years, this season’s smash hit looks set to break the overall attendance record set by Peter Pan well before the time the run of performances come to an end in January. The Christmas family pantomime has become a huge success at the theatre and is one of the highlights of the year for families of all ages across the city. Those attending the sold-out opening night performance were treated to another high quality show, initiated and produced by The Riverfront staff with lots of community input (including a brilliant cast of Newport children!) as well as the support of a highly experienced and successful co-producer in Ian Liston’s Hiss & Boo Theatre Company. Newport City Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, Councillor Debbie Wilcox, said: “The Riverfront pantomime has gone from strength-to-strength evidenced by the theatre having its best ever advanced sales and reserves. My advice to those who haven’t yet got their tickets is to not delay and get them now.” Beauty and the Beast is the spell-binding story of a selfish prince who is destined to spend the rest of his life hidden in his castle in the guise of a grotesque beast (Robert Vernon, of Pontypool/Panamanian decent). Resourceful heroine Beauty (Elin Llywd – Pobol Y Cwm, Stwnch) rushes to the rescue with her madcap French pals. Can our heroine save the day and learn to love the Beast? Crammed with comedy chaos, magical music and a big dollop of seasonal sparkle! There will be our “baddest” ever baddie Scaramouche (Jay Worthy – Brunel, Olympic Games Opening Ceremony) who you’ll love to boo, panto Dame Dominique Derriérre (Lee Mengo – Seasoned Riverfront Dame) and her slapstick son “Potty” Pascal (Richard Elis – EastEnders) with their crazy capers to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The pantomime is just one element of Newport’s festive fun that The Riverfront has been so heavily involved with this year. In November the theatre played a huge part in hosting the Christmas Lights Switch On, delivered by Newport City Council’s Events Team, which attracted over 5,000 people, and it is due to welcome another huge crowd for the arrival of the Coca Cola Truck on the 13 December. Alongside this The Riverfront will host it’s own Comedy Shed and festive boutique market and open mic event, Sessions, on the same evening. With the theatre playing such an enormous part in the city’s festive activities, combined with its ever expanding reputation for high quality theatrical and artistic productions, it is little wonder that The Riverfront’s Beauty and the Beast is such an incredible success! The Pantomime runs throughout December until 5 January 2014. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in person at The Riverfront Box Office, on the website www.newport.gov.uk/riverfrontarts or by calling 01633 656757.
