Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru announce a new season of plays

After a succesful year in 2013, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are very pleased to announce the new program for spring and summer 2014. Two new and original plays, an adaptation of a novel and a classical play will be part of the program, as well as exciting and innovative digital projects. Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will also be celebrating 10 years since the first production with events planned throughout the year.

Blodeuwedd will be the first project of the year, directed by Arwel Gruffydd. After the success of the production in Tomen y Mur near Trawsfynydd during the summer of 2013, this will be another chance to see Saunders Lewis’ interpretation of the old tale, this time on the theatre stage.

Y Negesydd is the first production of the summer; a new play by the popular author Caryl Lewis, directed by the well-known actress Ffion Dafis. Set in a village in Ceredigion during the 1950s and 60s, this is the chilling tale of a young girl, as she comes to terms with the whispers and secrets of her community. The play will be in partnership with Theatr Felinfach and will open there before touring around Wales.

Suitably for the National Eisteddfod Carmarthenshire 2014, there’ll be a chance to re-live the incredible story of the Beasleys family from Llangennech near Llanelli in the renowned play Dyled Eileen. An adaptation of original work by Angharad Tomos, Trefor and Eileen Beasley’s battle for rights for the Welsh language comes alive on stage in their hometown of Llanelli, directed by Elen Bowman.

Chwalfa, Gareth Miles’ adaptation of T Rowland Hughes’ novel will be the first ever production to appear on stage at Theatr Bryn Terfel. Arwel Gruffydd will direct the project which will be opening Pontio in Bangor on the 17th of September. This production by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru is in partnership with Pontio and Cwmni’r Frân Wen.

Arwel Gruffydd, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Artistic Director said;

“2013 was a very busy and exciting year for the company. Eight projects and eight original plays in 18 locations across the country. We’ve been to theatres across Wales, to inspirational and unexpected places, on tv, radio and online, on the streets in our communities and the feedback from the audience to the projects has been overwhelming. The reaction, enthusiasm and willingness of the audience to come on a journey with us throughout the year has been very uplifting, and with the creative talents of actors, authors, designers and directors a part of it all, we just can’t wait to start 2014!

Our work during 2014 will mainly be in theatres – large and smaller theatres in towns and countryside. There’s a lot of variation in terms of styles and themes, and the program is a mix of original work and literature classics. They are national stories which reflect the dialect and cultures of different areas in Wales, and whilst some stories are relevant to Llanelli and Carmarthenshire, or to the quarries in North Wales, or Ceredigion’s countryside, they also tell a national story about our people and heritage which is unique and incredible.”

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are also pleased to announce that they have received funding to develop an innovative digital platform called Sibrwd. This is one of four projects that have received funding from the Digital Research and Development Fund for the arts in Wales.

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will be working with the digital company Galactig to develop the platform which will ‘whisper’ into the ear of a member of audience during the performance. Created primarily to provide access and enrich the theatre experience of welsh learners and non-welsh speakers, Sibrwd has the potential to be used internationally by providing access to performances and projects in any language.

Another digital project that will take place during 2014, will be the launch of Oeddech chi ar y Bont? (‘Were you on the Bridge?’) on the 2nd of February. The website will be an interactive archive of the production ‘Y Bont’ and will concentrate on documentary and live aspects of the event. It will be a chance for those who were there on the day and others to re-live the event, find out more about creating the work, the research and a chance to discuss further. Sarah Bickerton, Assosiate Director on Y Bont will be curating the website.
