Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben (The World Will End) Dafydd James develops an exciting new Welsh drama alongside up and coming stage talent

Sherman Cymru & The Richard Burton Company, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

Welsh playwright Dafydd James is developing an exciting new drama in collaboration with fresh new talent from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in partnership with Sherman Cymru.

Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben (The World Will End) will have its first outing at Sherman Theatre from 11 – 15 February and Dafydd hopes to further develop the play afterwards.

The play was specifically written for, and will be performed, designed and technically managed by students of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama as part of their training. The actors will also be performing alongside established actors Siw Hughes (Pobl y Cwm, Gwaith Cartref) and John Norton (F.A.B Theatre’s The Drowned World and Give It A Name’s Rude - A Ska Musical) and will be directed by Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director for Welsh language work, Mared Swain (Sherman Cymru’s Trwy’r Ddinas Hon, Cynnau Tân and Dirty Protest’s After The End).

Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben is set on a dilapidated farmhouse in rural Vale of Glamorgan. When Sara, the estranged daughter, returns home after five years of silence to announce the coming of the rapture, her Mother, Ethni (played by Siw Huws), is determined to host the last supper.

As the home falls to pieces around them and the rapture approaches, the family must confront the grief that has torn them apart, and through facing the end, begin to live once again.

Dafydd James is a renowned playwright from Cardiff who has written numerous award-winning plays including The Village Social (National Theatre Wales), My Name Is Sue (Total Theatre Award), Sue the Second Coming and the Welsh language production Llwyth (Wales Theatre Critics Award, Sherman Cymru, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru). Over the last two years Dafydd has worked closely with Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director Mared Swain and the students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

This is a unique opportunity for aspiring theatre practitioners to work on a production in a working theatre environment.

Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben can also be enjoyed by non-Welsh-speakers as English surtitles are offered at both performances on Friday 14 February.

Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben (The World Will End) will be at the Sherman Theatre from the 11 to the 15 of February 2014. Ticket prices: £12. Concessions: £2 off. Under 25s: Half price. Suitable for ages 14+
