THREE NATIONAL THEATRE WALES PRODUCTIONS TRIUMPH AT THEATRE CRITICS OF WALES 2014 AWARDS |
National Theatre Wales has won five awards at the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards 2014, including best director for Wils Wilson, for Praxis Makes Perfect, Best Production in the English Language – won by a public vote – for Tonypandemonium, and Best Production for Children & Young People for Silly Kings. The full list of awards won by National Theatre Wales productions is as follows: Praxis Makes Perfect • Best Director: Wils Wilson • Best Lighting: Natasha Chivers Tonypandemonium • Best Production in the English Language (public vote) • Best Female Performance in the English Language: Siwan Morris Silly Kings • Best Production for Children and Young People All three productions were staged in National Theatre Wales’ trademark style, taking extraordinary locations and using them in unique ways… Praxis Makes Perfect is a live music/theatre gig created with Neon Neon (Gruff Rhys & Boom Bip). It premiered in a warehouse in Cardiff in May 2013, before moving onto to London and UK theatre festivals including Latitude and Mayfest. The show imagines the life of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the millionaire Italian communist and publisher at the heart of many of the most extraordinary events of the 20th century. The cast and set moved among the audience, as the show blurred the lines between a gig and a theatre production. Tonypandemonium was staged as part of a residency at the Park & Dare Theatre in Treorchy, in the south Wales valleys, in October 2013. National Theatre Wales took over the whole building for a month, hosting events on theatre writing, a live-streamed Assembly (a performance/debate event) and scratch performances. At heart of the residency was Tonypandemonium, the first play from local writer Rachel Trezise – a heartbreaking account of a daughter’s fraught relationship with her fun-loving and alcoholic mother. The auditorium was inverted so that audiences – who came in their thousands - sat among the performers, who included young people from the local community. Silly Kings was National Theatre Wales’ first Christmas show – a large-scale, musical production for children and very silly adults, adapted from the Fairy Tales of Monty Python’s Terry Jones, and performed in a huge Spiegeltent in the grounds of Cardiff Castle December 2013-January 2014. The second annual Theatre Critics of Wales Awards ceremony was held on Saturday 25th January 2014, at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff. The awards are the brainchild of members of the Young Critics Scheme, which is made up of young people, aged 12 to 25, who review stage productions in Wales that are then published online. The judging panel was made up of professional theatre critics working in Wales and members of the Young Critics Scheme. This year, for the first time, they were also joined by members of the Third Age Critics Scheme, which was launched this year with Age Cymru to give older people a voice in the arts in Wales. After the ceremony, National Theatre Wales’ Artistic Director John McGrath said: “I’m delighted to see three signature pieces by National Theatre Wales doing so well at the awards. I’m also thrilled to see the success of the burgeoning Welsh fringe theatre scene at the ceremony. It’s exciting to be making theatre in Wales at such a vibrant moment.” Speaking after winning the Best Director award for Praxis Makes Perfect, Wils Wilson said: “….” Siwan Morris, who won Best Female Performance in an English Language Production for Tonypandemonium, said: “….” |
