Theatre creator Tim Crouch (An Oak Tree and The Author) bring his unique interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic texts A Midsummer Nights Dream and The Tempest to Sherman Theatre from 4-7 March.I, Peaseblossom and I, Caliban, re-tells these famous stories through the eyes of one of the characters destined to watch the main action from the sidelines. Startling and engaging, both plays mix contemporary language with many excerpts from the original text so the plays are ideal for new and younger audiences to Shakespeare as well as those who know the original text. Both plays are performed by one man, Cardiff based actor Jimmy Whiteaker. Jimmy has performed in Nostalgia (Alma Theatre), Choking Hazard (Bristol Old Vic), Dr Faustus (Splendid Productions) and performed in the one man Edinburgh show in 2013, I Could've Been Better by Idiot Child / Bristol Old Vic Ferment. I, Peaseblossom tells the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as re-lived through the fevered nightmares of Shakespeare’s most neglected fairy, in wellington boots. Funny, heartbreaking and ever so slightly crazed, I, Peaseblossom is a gloriously anarchic dream of a ‘dream’. I, Caliban follows the events on Prospero’s island as viewed by Caliban, ‘a puppy headed monster’. Caliban is alone on the island at the end of The Tempest. He has only his memories, his magic tricks and one last bottle of wine to keep him company. I, Caliban is a sweet and sorry tale about injustice, inebriation and missing your mum. Actor Jimmy said: “Shakespeare gives us descriptions of Caliban through the other characters in The Tempest: he is a slave, a fish-man, a puppy-headed monster – but he is also capable of great poetry and beauty in his speech and thoughts. In Tim Crouch’s play, Caliban loves beautiful music, and is capable of real love and tenderness toward his mother. In some ways, Tim Crouch’s portrait of Caliban is more playful and has more obvious sympathy toward him.” (I lifted this from Bristol od vic website but will check with company its ok to use - http://bristololdvictheatre.wordpress.com/2011/05/10/jimmy-whiteaker-on-playing-caliban-in-fairymo/) Creator, Tim Crouch has previously visited the Sherman Theatre with An Oak Tree and has worked extensively as an actor for over 20 years. In recent years Tim has toured his own plays both nationally and internationally; My Arm, An Oak Tree, England and the highly controversial The Author have all played major city theatres in Europe and America. John Retallack, founder of Company of Angels and Associate Artist of Bristol Old Vic, directs the piece and brings to it his extensive experience in creating exceptional work for young audiences, both as playwright and director. Both shows are ideal for family audiences, schools, young people’s groups and those interested in Shakespeare and/or contemporary writing. Both pieces are suitable for young people of 8 years plus, and adults, and run for 55 minutes (per monologue). Shows can be watched separately (matinee performances) or as a double bill. I, Peaseblossom / I, Caliban will be at Sherman Theatre from 4 – 7 March. Both pieces are performed as a double bill at 7.30pm or individual matinee performances on Wednesday 5 March, 1.30pm (I, Peaseblossom only) and Friday 7 March 1.30pm (I, Caliban only).
