‘Anyone who hasn’t yet seen Opera’r Ddraig should go tomorrow – if you can’t buy a ticket, steal one! Judith Rose, Cardiff University, School of Music. Following their success in Edinburgh last summer with Cosi Fan Tutte, Opera’r Ddraig are once again returning to The Gate Arts Centre, February 19th, 21st and 22nd, to present their current production, Carmen. The tale offers suspense, intrigue and passion, with beautiful and well-loved music from Georges Bizet and is set to be an outstanding success. Opera’r Ddraig, Winner of the 2010 Wales Future Entrepreneur Award, are an exciting young enterprise, formed through Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, which aims to provide a professional platform for budding performers. They are committed to providing high-quality and accessible opera performances, with an extensive community engagement program in schools. Patron and International Soprano, Rebecca Evans, describes her experience of supporting the up-and-coming organization: “I have always found Opera to be inspiring and fulfilling and I believe Opera’r Ddraig’s approach and enthusiasm will also provide inspiration to the wide range of talent in Wales and beyond” Their performance of Carmen this spring is being staged at The Gate Arts Centre, in Roath and sees them tackling the well-known classic with a student cast and creative team, starring Clare Ghigo and Ben Thapa, as Carmen and Don Jose. The performances begin at 7pm and the cast and creative team will be offering a pre-show talk before each performance, at 6.15pm. The production is entirely sung in English.
