Wales Millennium Centre teams up with Southbank Centre for Women of the World Festival 2014 |
Next month, Wales Millennium Centre teams up with the Southbank Centre to host their own WOW (Women of the World) Caerdydd – a weekend festival of free performances, workshops and talks on various topics to celebrate women from all walks of life. Join the discussion #WOWCaerdydd: What do you ask yourself? Taking place at Wales Millennium Centre on the 8 & 9 March 2014, WOW Caerdydd has a vast program of events for all to get involved. Join the discussion, learn a new skill, get creative and be inspired, whether your role is mother, sister, daughter or wife. The weekend’s celebrations will form part of International World Women’s Day 2014 on Saturday 8 March. Hannah Wynn Jones, Community Engagement Officer at Wales Millennium Centre said: ‘WOW festival is such an inspiring festival and it’s brilliant to be working alongside the Southbank Centre to bring it to Cardiff. An excellent panel of speakers and workshop leaders have been brought together for WOW Caerdydd and the team at Wales Millennium Centre are thrilled to be providing a platform to spark new, creative and exciting discussions.’ Talks and discussions Saturday evening’s talk, Inspiring Change, will see an evening of riveting conversations and debate in the Centre’s Weston Studio, celebrating inspirational women and their phenomenal achievements. The event will feature speakers Uzo Iwobi (OBE) Race Council Cymru, theatre practitioner and compere Alex Murdoch, author Gwyneth Lewis, Christine Atkinson of Women’s Entrepreneurship Hub (WEH), Chief Executive of Chwarae Teg, Joy Kent, as well as workshop leaders and performers from across the festival. Entrepreneur Christine Atkinson will be giving a talk on Nurturing Women in Business. Hear Christine’s journey as a business women and tackling topics such as gender pay and gender inequalities. Women Making a Difference (WMAD) host the Welsh Women’s Summit, bringing together diverse women and key decision-makers to discuss issues facing under-represented groups in communities in Wales and get their voices heard. Workshops and Performances Workshops will be running across the weekend teaching new skills in Clothing and Jewellery Making. Laura Jane Williams, a writer for the Huffington Post and blogger of the website ‘Superlatively Rude’ explores avenues of inspiration in the workshops Female Writers; Finding your Voice and Teen Writers . Expect an explosion of creativity in Inspiration Mapping, which is themed on Inspiring Change. Huge drawing boards will be set up in the foyer for participants to doodle on, draw a picture or write a note. A crèche will be set up at the Centre for little ones to play and have fun, whilst parents can relax into the festival. Sit back and enjoy a story from Cat Weatherill, a storyteller for adults, who’ll be exploring ‘How To Be Glorious’ or take part in Mindfulness, a workshop exploring yoga techniques and covering three elements of mindfulness: breathing, movement and sound. Of course a festival wouldn’t be the same without a little music and the Glanfa stage will be providing a large array of performers including Cardiff born Gwenno Saunders (one third of The Pipettes) who’ll be performing work from her solo repertoire. Singer, songwriter and founding member of Bara Menyn, Heather Jones performs and Lynne Denman delves into some traditional Welsh and English folk songs. There will also be a chance to see a little of the world’s dance on the stage with Sudanese and Bangladeshi folk dancers.
