Adapted by Ian WooldridgeDirected by Richard Hull Thursday 24 – Saturday 26 April, 2014. At Mr Jonesʼ farm, Old Major gathers together his animal friends to tell them about his wonderful dream, where animals live free from the tyranny of the humans. When Old Major dies, and Jones forgets to feed the animals, the pigs put into effect their plan for rebellion – and ʻfour legs good, two legs badʼ seems to work for a while on Animal Farm... until some of the animals become more equal than others. George Orwellʼs 1945 satire on the perils of Stalinism has proved long-lived as a parable about totalitarianism anywhere. Ian Wooldridgeʼs dramatisation sticks closely to the original and retains both its affection for the animals and the incisiveness of its message. Director Richard Hull said, “This is one of the most challenges Youth Theatre productions ever staged at the Arts Centre. Despite being written some sixty years ago, as a company we have found so many parallels with the politics of the world today - the blatant hypocrisy of those in power and the suppression of those who choose to speak out against injustice being just two. These young actors from our local community have risen to the challenge of portraying the animal characteristics required of them with aplomb - and the evening promises to be both thought-provoking and entertaining.” To book please contact Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre |
