Wales Millennium Centre to present exceptional dance adaptation of Lord of the Flies |
Spectacular dance production of Lord of the Flies comes to Wales Millennium Centre this October (22 -25) as part of the Centre’s tenth anniversary programme of celebrations. A Matthew Bourne New Adventures and Re:Bourne production, young dancers from across South Wales will be offered a unique opportunity to perform in the ensemble for the show’s Cardiff run. This outstanding production of Lord of the Flies is choreographed by Olivier nominated Scott Ambler, adapted and directed by Matthew Bourne and Scott Ambler and based on the classic novel by William Golding. Lord of the Flies is a rare and distinctive collaboration that brings together professional dancers with young people, many of whom who have never danced before. For the four-day run at Wales Millennium Centre, around 30 young males aged between 11 and 25 will be selected from across South Wales to perform in the show. Over the following months, Wales Millennium Centre will be launching an outreach recruitment programme to find performers to star in this exciting production. The recruitment drive will commence with a series of workshops across South Wales, led by the project’s Wales-based ‘young ambassadors’, employed by Matthew Bourne to discover and train the young male performers. Final auditions for the company of young dancers will take place in late June. Head of Programming, Louise Miles–Crust, said: “I’m extremely pleased that we’re able to offer such an exceptional dance production as part of our tenth anniversary celebrations. The opportunity for a group of young people to perform in a large-scale, professional production is a remarkable one which will no doubt have a profound impact on the lives of the young people involved. I’m both thrilled and proud that through our long-standing relationship with New Adventures and Re:Bourne we are able to offer such an incredible opportunity.” Commenting on the Lord of the Flies tour, Matthew Bourne said: “Lord of the Flies is a project never before mounted on the large-scale. This unique collaboration between my production company, New Adventures, and charity, Re:Bourne will enable thousands of young people and their families across the country to experience dance at close hand, and for many, for the very first time. I look forward to an exciting, and for some, life-changing year ahead”. The show’s professional company includes New Adventures dancers Sam Archer as ‘Maurice’, Luke Murphy as ‘Sam’, Dominic North as ‘Ralph’, Sam Plant as ‘Piggy’, Alastair Postlethwaite as ‘Eric’, Danny Reubens as ‘Jack’ and Dan Wright as ‘Roger’. For this outstanding dance adaptation of Lord of the Flies, the action is transferred from the deserted island of William Golding’s classic novel, to a deserted theatre, where a group of schoolboys find themselves abandoned. With no adults around they start to make their own rules and create their own civilisation, before order breaks down and the story builds to an electrifying climax. Golding’s legendary characters Ralph, Piggy, Jack and the boys will be brought to life with raw energy and emotional intensity. Devised and directed by Olivier and Tony award winner Matthew Bourne, choreographed by Olivier nominated Scott Ambler and featuring set and costume design by Olivier Award-winner Lez Brotherston, music by Terry Davies, lighting design by Chris Davey and sound design by Paul Groothuis. Touring Directors are New Adventures principal dancers Adam Galbraith and Alan Vincent. This production is supported by Arts Council England, the Arts Council of Wales in addition to other major trusts and donors. Originally commissioned by Glasgow Theatres, part of Ambassador Theatre Group.
