A REGULAR LITTLE HOUDINI - Swansea Grand Theatre (Arts Wing) |
A Regular Little Houdini, a one man show written and performed by Daniel LLewelyn-Williams, is in the depot studio of Swansea Grand Theatre's Arts Wing on Wednesday 16 April at 7.45pm.Set in Newport docks between 1905 and 1913, the play follows a boy obsessed with the escapologist, Houdini. Houdini visited Britain twice in the Edwardian period, sparking huge controversy with his cunning self-promotion stunts. On both occasions, he had run-ins with the Newport police, which resulted in arrest and a court case. The story is told through a child's eyes and the historical element of the piece is delivered with the magic and enthusiasm of youth. He lives through, and tells of, the massive industrial growth of South Wales, the building of the transporter bridge and the Newport dock disaster of 1909, which killed thirty nine people. Growing to adulthood, measuring himself against the real working class heroes in his family, he holds on to the ultimate dream of emulating his fantasy hero, Houdini. Through magical stories of Cyclops, escapism and amazement, the boy conjures up a moving, fantastical slice of our own history. Daniel LLewelyn-Williams is a Welsh actor, Newport born and bred. He has spent the last twelve years at various regional theatres and the West End and has appeared in various television shows over the years, including Eastenders, Midsomer Murders, Torchwood and Doctors. The show features music specially written by 13 year old Newport Celtic fiddler, Meg Cox. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01792 475715 or can be purchased online at www.swanseagrand.co.uk and are £10.00 and £8.00 concessions. All tickets include a 50p Restoration Fund contribution. Online fee applies. |
