Play based on infamous Italian serial killer Roberto Succo
comes to Chapter, Cardiff

This July, theatre company August 012 will bring renowned French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès’s play Roberto Zucco, based on the infamous 1980’s Italian serial killer Roberto Succo, to Wales. Directed by Mathilde Lopez (Tonypandemonium, Caligula, Serious Money, Pornography), Roberto Zucco will run at Chapter 9-19 July.

The play (in a translation by Martin Crimp) is based on the 1980's Italian serial killer Roberto Succo who murdered his parents and escaped multiple incarcerations from the Italian, French and Swiss police forces for more than 10 years to finally commit suicide in prison. Succo became infamous for taking on false identities and changing his persona. The play furthers the mystery of Zucco, suggesting him as a quasi-religious, anti-hero figure and highlighting the real life myths society creates.

The production will incorporate a live community choir and live electric guitar playing to create a unique soundscape, using the cliches of gangster film tracks mixed live with a capella, polyphonic, religious songs.

Director Mathilde Lopez comments:

“Zucco is an absurd tragicomedy that combines genres as diverse as American gangster movies, poetry and biblical parable. This exciting, beautiful and cruel play talks about the irrationality, violence and infinite compassion we hold within us. It unsettles our moral compass in a funny and scandalous way that I think audiences will really engage with. One way we’ve been describing the play is ‘a cheap 1980's version of the ten commandments in a brothel’ – and I think that really sums it up!”

Roberto Zucco runs between 9 and 19 July (no Sundays) at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Chapter’s Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or www.chapter.org
