Award winning play to be staged at this year’s Eisteddfod
and new touring show for children

The winning work of the Drama Medal at the National Eisteddfod 2013 will be a co-production between Sherman Cymru, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and the National Eisteddfod this year during the week-long festival held in Carmarthenshire. Dŵr Mawr Dyfn, by Glesni Haf Jones, will be performed at the Cwt Drama on the Eisteddfod field, with Sara Lloyd directing.

Dŵr Mawr Dyfn will be performed from Monday to Friday during the Eisteddfod week (4 – 9 August 2014), and tickets are now on sale through the National Eisteddfod.

The cast will include Lowri Gwynne, Victoria Pugh and Manon Wilkinson. The play tells the story of a girl called Tryweryn. As she recalls memories, secrets and lies, ghosts from her past come back to haunt her – and she yearns to find out what really happened under the cold waves of the lake. This is the first performance of this award-winning play, and will be a part of Sherman Cymru’s RAW/AMRWD productions. RAW/AMRWD is no frills theatre with the writing itself taking centre stage.

Arwel Gruffydd, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Artistic Director, said;
“It’s a pleasure for us as a company to stage Dŵr Mawr Dyfn this year as a co-production with Sherman Cymru and the National Eisteddfod. As a former judge of the competition, it’s a personal pleasure for me that we can include this play in the Cwt Drama this year. Glesni is a very talented writer and it’s been great to see her developing during the process of getting the play ready for the stage, working with Mared Swain (Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director) initially and now Sara Lloyd (Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Associate Director) who’ll be directing the production. This will be Sara’s first project as director since joining the company. Supporting and developing new artists and authors and developing new work for the stage is a fundamental part of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s vision.”

Glesni Haf Jones is originally from Mold, and is now living in Cardiff, and works for S4C. This is her first full play for the stage. Glesni said;

“I’m really pleased that Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are performing Dŵr Mawr Dyfn at the Eisteddfod. It’s a dream for any young writer to see the play they’ve written on stage – and I’m looking forward to seeing my play being performed for the first time. Mared Swain from Sherman Cymru has been inspirational during the process of developing the play, and I’ve appreciated her advice and experience, and I’m looking forward very much to working with the director Sara Lloyd on the play.”

Elfed Roberts, Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru’s Chief Executive said;
“We’re extremely pleased that the winning work of the Drama Medal Competition in last year’s National Eisteddfod is being staged at this year’s festival. It’s a pleasure to be able to achieve this with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Sherman Cymru, and hopefully visitors to the Eisteddfod field will take the chance and see this talented new writer’s work.”

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Sherman Cymru also have plans to work closely in the future, especially on the tour of The Ugly Duckling. This is Sherman Cymru’s Christmas Show this year, and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will work in partnership to take the show, for children under 7, on tour around Wales in January 2015. Katherine Chandler has written the stage adaptation, with Mererid Hopwood responsible for the Welsh translation. The show will travel South Wales during December, in the Sherman Theatre over the Christmas period, and will go on tour around Wales in January. Sara Lloyd, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Associate Director will once again direct the project. This will be her second directing project as a member of the company’s staff.
