She is determined to escape the ghosts of her past by telling her son, Oswald (Jack Lowden), the truth about his father. But on his return from his life as a painter in France, Oswald reveals how he has already inherited the legacy of Alving’s dissolute life.

ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA
TERRY GILLIAM’S
BENVENUTO CELLINI

Unseen in London for many years and never previously at ENO, Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini is forged anew at the London Coliseum by director Terry Gilliam and ENO Music Director Edward Gardner – the identical pairing responsible for the company’s award winning The Damnation of Faust in 2011.

With its stunning visual and musical set pieces such as the Mardi Gras carnival, Berlioz’s first completed opera is based on the autobiography of celebrated 16th century goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. Two entwined plots – Cellini’s love for Teresa and his triumphant fulfilment of a commission to cast a bronze statue of Perseus – provide the framework for some of Berlioz’s most vibrant, swashbuckling and tender music, against a plot of thwarted love, elopment, intrigue, disguise, mistaken identity, secular merry making and sacred ceremony.

A stellar cast has been assembled for this significant new production, led by rising tenor Michael Spyres in the title role, with the stunning soprano Corinne Winters as Cellini’s lover, Teresa. ENO favourite Willard White returns to the company to add Pope Clement VII to his already extensive list of roles.

Mae opera orffenedig gyntaf Berlioz wedi ei seilio ar fywgraffiad Benvenuto Cellini, eurof a cherfluniwr clodfawr o’r 16eg ganrif. Mae dau blot yn cydblethu - cariad Cellini am Teresa a’i gyflawniad gorfoleddus o gomisiwn i gastio cerflun efydd o Perseus - gan ddarparu fframwaith ar gyfer ychydig o gerddoriaeth fwyaf bywiog, cyffrous a thyner Berlioz, yn erbyn plot o gariad rhwystredig, ffoi, chwilfrydedd, camadnabyddiaeth, mwynhau seciwlar a seremoni gysegredig. Cynhyrchiad newydd sylweddol gyda chast serol. ::

Director: Jeremy Herrin, Designer: Max Jones
Composer: Stephen Warbeck

This summer, for the first time, Mwldan is screening three performances from Shakepeare’s Globe in London, your chance to experience three incredible new productions from the world’s most famous stage.

Prospero, Duke of Milan, usurped and exiled by his own brother, holds sway over an enchanted island. He is comforted by his daughter Miranda and served by his spirit Ariel and the deformed slave Caliban. When Prospero raises a storm to wreck this perfidious brother and his confederates on the island, his long contemplated revenge at last seems within reach.

Roger Allam won the Olivier Award for best actor for his role as Falstaff in Henry IV parts 1 & 2 at the Globe in 2010. Other recent credits include The Thick of It (BBC) and Tamara Drewe (Film). Colin Morgan is best known for playing Merlin in the long running BBC series Merlin.

ROBIN HOOD
Traditional, adapted by Oliver Gray

Illyria’s production has been adapted from the earliest Robin Hood ballads - predating Chaucer. The drama is written in easy to understand verses and presents lovable characters such as Little John and Maid Marian. First performed in 2007, it remains one of Illyria’s most popular titles. Come and join in the fun as Robin hides from the Sheriff of Nottingham, stealing from the wealthy and give to those in need. You’ll definitely laugh, you’ll probably cry - and if you’re not cheering at the archery competition involving the entire audience then you must be dead. Suitable for all ages 5+.

MACBETH
By William Shakespeare

After 23 years, Illyria is STILL the only touring theatre company that has won 4 international awards. Renowned worldwide for its clarity, quality and innovation, Illyria once again presents Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. Macbeth’s outstanding qualities and achievements ensure that he has a bright future ahead of him. Three mad witches he meets after a battle confirm no less. Or, rather, two of them do. The third states that he will become King himself. One brief, crazy suggestion sows a seed of ambition, causes the unravelling

of a great man and incites a chain of treachery, murder and destruction. Expect a gripping story and the dazzling swordplay for which Illyria has an unmatched reputation.
Ar ôl 23 mlynedd, mae Illyria yn DAL i fod yr unig gwmni theatr teithiol sydd wedi ennill 4 gwobr ryngwladol. Yn enwog ar draws y byd am ei eglurder, ansawdd a dyfeisgarwch, mae Illyria’n mynd ati unwaith yn rhagor i gyflwyno trasiedi fwyaf Shakespeare. Mae rhinweddau neilltuol Macbeth yn sicrhau fod ganddo ddyfodol disglair o’i flaen, hynny yw, hyd nes iddo gyfarfod â thair gwrach wallgof, ac oddi yno mae un awgrymiad hurt yn arwain at ei ddinistr. GEORGE’S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE
By Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood

Illyria returns with yet another Roald Dahl classic full of (literally) larger-than-life characters. It is the first day of half term, Gran has written to say she is coming to stay and George will have to give up his bedroom. It would not be so bad if Grandma were a nice Grandma. But George’s Grandma is horrible. “George do this!” “George do that!” “George is it time for my medicine?” What’s the point of taking medicine, George wonders, when it’s clearly not doing her any good and it certainly isn’t making her any nicer? So George decides to concoct his own medicine which he gives to Grandma on a spoon - with hilarious results! Suitable for all ages 5+.

Dychwela Illyria gyda chlasur arall o waith Roald Dahl. Mae’n ddiwrnod cyntaf hanner tymor ac mae Mamgu wedi ysgrifennu i ddweud ei bod yn dod i aros a bydd yn rhaid i George rhoi ei ystafell wely iddi. Byddai ddim cynddrwg petasai Mamgu yn fam-gu neis. Ond mae Mamgu George yn ych a fi. Mae George yn mynd ati i gymysgu moddion arbennig iawn iddi, gan nad yw’r moddion sydd ganddi nawr yn ei gwneud ddim yn neisiach - gyda chanlyniadau doniol tu hwnt! ::

SAM SWEENEY
MADE IN THE GREAT WAR

In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard.

Discovery of the history behind the fiddle has inspired Sam to create a multi-media performance telling the incredible story of the fiddle which took nearly 100 years to complete, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Collaborating with award-winning story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron, as well as Bellowhead lighting designer Emma Thompson who has developed set, projections and lighting for the show, MADE IN THE GREAT WAR will bring the reality of World War I into 2014, as Sam performs the show with the actual fiddle made by non-returning World War I soldier Richard Howard.

Pan brynodd Sam Sweeney, chwaraewr ffidil gyda Bellowhead, feiolin yn 2009, roedd ganddi ymddangosiad offeryn newydd sbon, ond y dyddiad ar y label tu mewn oedd 1915. Ar ôl ymchwilio, darganfu Sam fod gan ei offeryn newydd, hanes diddorol iawn, ac mae’r stori hon wedi ysbrydoli Sam i greu perfformiad aml-gyfrwng sy’n adrodd hanes rhyfeddol ei ffidil a gymrodd bron canrif i’w chwblhau, i farcio canmlwyddiant dechrau’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. When three witches tell Macbeth that he is destined to occupy the throne of Scotland, he and his wife choose to become the instruments of their fate and to kill the first man standing in their path, the virtuous King Duncan. SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE ON SCREEN
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (PG)
by William Shakespeare

Director: Dominic Dromgoole
Designer: Jonathan Fensom
Composer: Claire van Kampen
Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius – but Demetrius is supposed to be marrying Hermia… When the Duke of Athens tries to enforce the marriage, the lovers take refuge in the woods and wander into the midst of a dispute between the king and queen of the fairies.

Shakespeare put some of his most dazzling dramatic poetry at the service of this teasing, glittering, hilarious and amazingly inventive play, whose seriousness is only fleetingly glimpsed beneath its dreamlike surface.

Michelle Terry won the 2011 Olivier Award for her portrayal of Sylvia in Tribes (Royal Court). Michelle returns to the Globe having previously played the Princess of France in Love’s Labour’s Lost (2007).

Mae Hermia yn caru Lysander a Helen yn caru Demetrius – ond mae Demetrius i fod i briodi Hermia.... Pan mae Dug Athens yn ceisio gorfodi’r briodas, mae’r cariadon yn chwilio lloches yn y goedwig ac yn cerdded mewn i ffrae rhwng brenin a brenhines y tylwyth teg. ::

MANON (MacMillan)

Manon Lescaut is a beautiful young woman who falls prey to the moral corruption of 18th century Paris. Kenneth MacMillan brings Manon’s story vividly to life, with his ballet, which evokes the brutality and decadence described in Abbé Prévost’s infamous novel, as well as the feckless character of Manon herself – torn between love for the poet Des Grieux and her desire for money and attention. The cast of complex characters includes the callous Monsieur GM, the swaggering Jailer, Manon’s roguish brother Lescaut and his coquettish Mistress, but at the ballet’s heart are the duets MacMillan created for Manon and Des Grieux, which are among the most emotionally intense and erotically charged ever choreographed.

BEDROOM FARCE
By Alan Aykbourn
Directed by Richard Tunley

From the team behind Bouncers, Up ‘n’ Under: The Welsh Tour, Neville’s Island and last year’s high-flying hit Boeing Boeing.

Funny, gripping and acutely observed, Alan Ayckbourn’s sophisticated ‘70s comedy lifts the lid on the secrets of marriage - from the impetuous joy of new love to unshakable lifelong partnership. Over the course of one night, an outrageously selfish couple parade their problems around the bedrooms of three other couples, exposing the cracks in other people’s marriages as well as their own. Tightly written and exceptionally funny, Bedroom Farce explores the different pressures of relationships at their different stages, slicing deep into the soul of suburbia.

Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece brought to you with the usual Black RAT high energy and gusto!

ROYAL OPERA
I DUE FOSCARI (Verdi)

Plácido Domingo returns to give his first London performance of another major Verdi baritone role. I Due Foscari is based on a play by Byron set in 15th-century Venice. The two Foscari of the title are the city’s Doge, Francesco Foscari (sung by Domingo) and his son, Jacopo (Francesco Meli), who has been brought back from exile to face charges of treason. Jacopo is innocent, but neither the pleas of Jacopo’s wife Lucrezia (Maria Agresta) nor those of his powerful father are enough to save Jacopo from condemnation by the hostile Council of Twelve. This taut, sombre drama provides the basis for one of Verdi’s most arresting early scores, not heard at the Royal Opera House since 1995 and newly presented in an acclaimed staging by the American director Thaddeus Strassberger, which had a much praised premiere in Los Angeles in 2012 and has gone on to further success in Valencia and Los Angeles.

Mae Cyfarwyddwr Cerddorol y Met, James Levine, yn arwain cynhyrchiad newydd nwyfus o gampwaith Mozart, wedi ei gyfarwyddo gan Richard Eyre, sy’n gosod cyffro’r gomedi ddomestig glasurol hon mewn plasty 19eg ganrif yn Seville, ond yn ystod oes euraidd diwedd y 1920au. ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

Christopher Wheeldon’s full-length ballet based on Lewis Carroll’s book is an exuberant piece of storytelling featuring an instantly recognisable cast of characters, among them a tap-dancing Mad Hatter, a tetchy White Rabbit and a raucously bad-tempered Queen of Hearts.

Wheeldon, along with composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley, have created a genuine family ballet in the spirit of Carroll’s much-loved children’s classic. While regular ballet goers can appreciate nods to other famous works – there’s a parody of the Rose Adagio from The Sleeping Beauty, for example, with jam tarts instead of flowers – the ballet is above all a brilliant realisation of Carroll’s zany dream-world featuring stunning choreography, a colourful score and ingenious stage-magic..
