SHERMAN Cymru throws its doors open today (SUN) for the third day of Wales Dance Platform with early afternoon devoted to families followed by a show from four choreographers from across the nation. Wales Dance Platform is presenting more than 30 choreographers, photographers and film-makers across Cardiff’s major dance venues: Chapter, Sherman Cymru and Wales Millennium Centre. All the shows at Wales Millennium Centre and Chapter on Friday and Saturday sold out but the venues’ public areas hosted free performances giving as large a number of people as possible a flavour of independent contemporary dance in Wales. Tickets for today’s shows are available from Sherman Cymru. www.shermancymru.co.uk Day passes are £15. Tickets for the family show at 2.30pm are £10 and £2.50 for under 16s for the family performances at 2.30pm (including a free workshop at 1pm). Tickers for the 4pm show featuring the work of four choreographers are £10. The event is organised by Creu Cymru, the development agency for theatres and arts centres in Wales. Director Deborah Keyser said, “The Platform is showing that the independent dance scene in Wales is flourishing, and artists from across the nation are showing what is being created here and now. Our own successful Dance Buddy scheme (partnering independent artists with venues) is an important part of the picture - and we hope the Platform will nurture a range of new relationships between practitioners and presenters.” The Platform’s Creative Producers Ann Sholem and Roy Campbell Moore are also sponsoring a new £1,000 award for the most eye catching event during the weekend. Ann Sholem said, “The ‘speed-dating’ nature of short snappy presentations is working well and audiences are loving the new works. The dance artists have really risen to the challenge of presenting both finished and try outs of new works that they have self- selected, as they have total control over what they present.” Today there is also a critical debate about the work with arts writers meeting to discuss the work, styles of dance writing and reviewing, sponsored by the media union, the National Union of Journalists. The critics attending the weekend have been using social media including Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and blogging to widen the conversation with artists and the public. WDP 2014 will take place as Cardiff prepares to host British Dance Edition 2016, the UK dance industry’s leading showcase event, which will be jointly hosted from March 17 to 20, 2016 by the Cardiff Consortium consisting of Coreo Cymru, Wales Millennium Centre, National Dance Company Wales, Chapter Arts Centre and Sherman Cymru. A Cardiff Consortium, led by Coreo Cymru, to create a dynamic and diverse high quality platform that inspires exchange, debate and new partnerships. Carole Blade from Coreo Cymru said that supporting and nurturing independent dance artists in Wales is at the heart of Coreo Cymru’s work. “With British Dance Edition coming to Cardiff for the first time in 2016, focussing the dance industry’s attention on talent here in Wales, I hope Wales Dance Platform will be a catalyst for the creation of new works that could become part of what is presented in two years’ time.” For details of today’s family workshop and performances and then two shows of new dance works visit www.walesdanceplatform.co.uk or visit www.facebook.com/walesdance and follow Wales Dance Platform on Twitter @dancewales or call Sherman Cymru on 029 2064 6900 |
