Following the critically acclaimed stagings of Dennis Kelly’s Love and Money in 2013, Simon Stephens’s Pornography in 2012 and Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money in 2011, Waking Exploits return with a Welsh tour of Gary Owen’s debut play, Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco, opening at Chapter in Cardiff on 17 September. Saturday night in a small Welsh town. Testosterone, booze and drug-fuelled messiness. Standard. The lives of a school bully turned territorial hard man, a geek yearning to escape and a would-be karaoke king play out in a tale of lust, violence, revenge and the quest for the perfect girl. A razor sharp portrait of masculinity in crisis, Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco is by turns desolate and life-affirming, heart-breaking and hilarious, everyday and remarkable. Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco was Gary Owen’s 2001 breakthrough play and established him as “Welsh theatre’s blazing new talent” (The Guardian). Gary comments: “It will be brilliant, but slightly weird, to see this play being done in Chapter again. It's been done loads - every year there are a couple of productions somewhere in the world - but seeing the play that started my career, at the venue where it was first produced, is going to be a huge pleasure. And slightly unsettling.” Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco will be directed by former National Theatre Wales Creative Associate (2011-13) and Camden People’s Theatre Artistic Director (2006-2011), Matt Ball and the cast comprises Jordan Bernarde, Gwydion Rhys and Sion Pritchard. Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco opens at Chapter in Cardiff on 17 September before commencing a two week tour of Wales.
