At this year’s National Eisteddfod in Llanelli Bara Caws presented ‘Garw’, a brand new play by Siôn Eirian, to great critical and public acclaim. This is the author’s first new work for the stage for 12 years. The play will be performed at Theatr Mwldan on Tuesday 30 September at 7.30pm. Born in Hirwaun, near Aberdare, Siôn spent his early years in Ammanford, before the family moved to live to Mold, Flintshire.

‘Garw’ is a challenging new play about people and their personal battles in a time of great change in Wales. It spans a period of five years between 1986 - 1991, and is located in an anonymous village in the Aman Valley. The world is changing for Llew, an ex-miner and ex-boxer.

Supporting the families now are not the rough hands of the men, but the industrious fingers of the women. And as Llew’s horizons become narrower, the horizons of Sara, his wife, and Lowri, his daughter, widen in unforeseen directions. And in the wake of these changes, the foundations of the home begin to crumble.

Siôn Eirian was keen not to focus on the familiar story of the miners’ strike, though one of the main characters is an ex-miner. He has, rather, portrayed Llew as someone who wasn’t employed in one of the big pits of South Wales, but in a small, primitive drift mine, where the unions played no part. What we have in ‘Garw’ is a portrayal of a society at a crossroads.

The cast include a number of familiar faces Rhys Parry-Jones from Crymych, Eiry Thomas, Sion Ifan and Gwawr Loader. Betsan Llwyd, Artistic Director of Bara Caws, directs.

Following a sell-out week at the Eisteddfod, ‘Garw’ will be touring venues around Wales between Monday 22 September and Saturday 11 October 2014.
Tickets for Garw on Tuesday 30 September 7.30 pm are £9 (£8) and are available to book from Theatr Mwldan’s Box Office on 01239 621200, online at, or via smart phone by visiting
