The battle cry of Liberty or Death! will ring vociferously from Welsh National Opera this autumn with two performances of Bizet's Carmen which examines personal liberty and what it means to be a free woman. The production will be performed at Swansea Grand Theatre on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October at 7.00pm. Bizet's Carmen is one of the best-known operas in the world which tells the story of a free spirit who would rather die than surrender her liberty. Punctuated with memorable music, including the sultry Habenera and the rousing Toreador Song, this classic revival evokes the heady atmosphere of 19th century Spain. Discussing Carmen, WNO Chief Executive and Artistic Director David Pountney says, "Bizet's scandalously low-life opera - the first ever kitchen sink drama and the mother of all musicals - makes a powerful plea for individual, and above all, feminine freedom." Carmen will be conducted by Erik Nielsen who makes his debut with WNO in Autumn 2014. Mezzo-soprano Alessandra Volpe will sing the title role of Carmen, with Peter Wedd singing the role of Don Jose, and Kostas Smoriginas singing Escamillo. In one of his first roles as WNO Associate Artist for 2014 | 2015, Aidan Smith will sing the role of Zuniga.
