Silent cinema classic The Fall of the House of Usher visits Aberystwyth Arts Centre with live, new score

On Friday 24 October, 7.30pm, the silent cinema classic The Fall of the House of Usher will be screened at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, alongside the live performance of a new score for chamber orchestra composed by Charlie Barber.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s Gothic short story and presented by Sound Affairs, The Fall of the House of Usher (France, 1928) is probably French filmmaker Jean Epstein's best-known work and is considered a pioneer of cinematic horror, with its overlapping visual textures, experimental camera movement and otherworldly, ethereal imagery.

Internationally known composer Charlie Barber's new score has been composed specially for a chamber orchestra of sixteen musicians and returns to Debussy's uncompleted opera La Chute de la Maison Usher to bring further depth to the atmosphere of this cinematic tour de force. Charlie comments:

“As part of my research for the new score, I took inspiration from some of Claude Debussy's music sketches for his unfinished opera. It's been a fascinating process, and I'm very excited to have written a full score for this genre-defining cinema classic. It will be fantastic to hear it performed and to take it on tour with such a large ensemble.”

Sound Affairs is renowned for producing memorable performances and has been staging strikingly innovative concerts and events featuring new music juxtaposed yet integrated with cinema, theatre, dance and video for over twenty years.
