Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru : Chwalfa

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru : Chwalfa Following Pontio’s statement Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are disappointed to understand that it won’t be possible to stage Chwalfa at Theatr Bryn Terfel, Pontio, in the new year.

The company is, however, pleased to announce that the first main stage production of 2015 will be Y Fenyw Ddaeth o’r Môr, a new Welsh translation by Menna Elfyn of Fruen fra havet (The Lady from the Sea) by Henrik Ibsen, directed by the company’s Artistic Director, Arwel Gruffydd, in association with the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven. The production will open at the Torch the end of February before touring Wales during March 2015.

Arwel Gruffydd said;
“The company has been keen for some time to stage a Welsh translation of a major world classic of naturalistic theatre. Ibsen, of course, was the original champion, and his influence on theatre history is second to none. While we are disappointed not to be able to stage Chwalfa in the new year as we had hoped, we shall make every effort to find alternative dates for this production as soon as possible. I’m pleased however, that we are able to proceed with the production of Ibsen’s romantic classic, Y Fenyw Ddaeth o’r Môr in the new year, and to be working alongside the Torch for the first time. It’s a fine play and a griping story , at the heart of which is a complex love triangle, and questions around a woman’s right and freedom to choose her own destiny. The story is originally set in Norway, but Menna Elfyn’s translation makes use of Pemrokeshire’s unique dialect. We are therefore delighted that we are able to open at the Torch in Milford Haven.”

Full details and locations of Y Fenyw Ddaeth o’r Môr tour will be released soon.
