The Centre Theatre Company will be presenting a production of “Colder Than Here”, a play by award-winning playwright, Laura Wade, as part of “The Elephant In The Room” event, to be held at the YMCA on Swansea’s Kingsway First performed at The Soho Theatre in London, “Colder Than Here” tells the story of an ordinary family who cannot ignore the fact that their mother is dying. In the meantime though, life goes on. There are boilers to be fixed, cats to be fed and the perfect funeral to be planned. As Myra researches burial spots and biodegradable coffins, her family is finally forced to communicate with her, and each other, as they face up to an unpredictable future. With a first class cast, Wade’s original and beautifully observed play balances raw emotion with a deliciously delicate black humour. Anne West takes on the role of Myra, and is joined by Melissa McCarthy and Angharrad Day as her two battling daughters. Ian McCloy plays the husband who really does not want to face up to the situation of watching his wife die. “Colder Than Here” is being performed at the YMCA theatre in Swansea on Friday 31st October and Saturday 1st November at 7.30 pm. Each performance will be followed by an opportunity to speak with the cast and director about the issues raised in this funny and thought-provoking play. The Elephant In The Room is a four-day event being organized by The Centre, who provide support and complementary therapy treatments for those living with cancer and other life-limiting conditions, and their carers. Intended to bring what is often a taboo subject out into the open, The Elephant In The Room is aiming at stimulating awareness and encouraging discussion around the subject of death and dying. As well as the play, the four-day event also features an opening concert entitled “Not The End”, a full programme of talks and workshops, and the exhibition “A Graceful Death” by the artist Antonia Rolls. There will also be plenty of opportunity to talk with health-professionals and providers of services for end of life situations on a variety of subjects, including end of life care, making an advance decision (living will) and green funeral planning. Tickets for Colder Than Here available from The Centre www.thecentre-swansea.co.uk All the proceeds from the event will be going to support the work of The Centre in Swansea, and also the work of A Graceful Death. |
