‘CRITICS ABER’ - CWMNI THEATR ARAD GOCH SETS UP A NEW COMMUNITY OF THEATRE CRITICS IN ABERYSTWYTH

On the 9th of February, Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch set up a workshop to train young theatre critics. The workshop was led by the successful Welsh critic, Lowri Hâf Cooke.

The main purpose of the workshop, which was supported by ‘Young Critics Wales’, as well as the Aberystwyth EGO, Theatre in Wales and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, was to inspire young people from the area to write critical reviews of the arts.

“There is a lack of arts critics outside Cardiff and South Wales, particularly young critics and Welsh language critics. It’s important to encourage more arts reviews in order to inspire constructive dialogue” Jeremy Turner, Artistic Director Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch.

As a result of this workshop, nine young people, all of them Welsh speakers, have signed up to be part of ‘Critics Aber’, a new community of young arts critics in Aberystwyth.

“I was extremely pleased that Arad Goch had arranged this workshop. We need more critical voices in Wales, especially Welsh voices. If I can make a career for myself as an arts critic, there is no reason why the members of this community can’t do the same” Lowri Hâf Cooke

Heulwen Davies, Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch’s Marketing Officer, has already started working with the community to organise performances for them to attend and to research platforms for them to publish their work;

“We are keen to mentor these young critics and get them set up. They have already reviewed performances here at Canolfan Arad Goch and Aberystwyth Arts Centre and we’re excited that platforms such as magazines, local newspapers, websites and broadcasters such as BBC Radio Cymru and S4C are ready to publish their reviews. It’s a fantastic opportunity for these young people and it encourages public dialogue about the Arts in Wales” Heulwen Davies

During the next few weeks, ‘Critics Aber’ will be reviewing all kinds of performances from children’s theatre to contemporary dance;

“This is a great opportunity to reflect and to discuss the arts publicly. We feel very passionate about the arts and through ‘Critics Aber’, we now have the opportunity to share our opinions, to be honest and to encourage dialogue. I’m really enjoying the experience so far and I’m pleased that companies like Arad Goch respect our opinions. I feel very fortunate and excited to be part of it all” Sian Elin

Arts Critic Lowri Hâf Cooke emphasised the importance of blogs as a place for young critics to publish their work and encourage discussions. As a result of this, ‘Critics Aber’ have been working with Elin Crowley, Arad Goch’s Artistic Assistant, to develop their own blog, www.criticsaber.com which will be live within the next week!

“We were keen to have our own platform to publish our reviews. All our reviews will be published here and Arad Goch will also send every review to the press, the media and the production companies themselves” Nannon Evans
