Sherman Cymru announces exciting opportunitiesfor new playwrights
Sherman Cymru’s Spring season is already bursting with new writing from the finest Wales based writers and boasting Welsh talent nationally and internationally. On the first night of Welsh playwright, Matthew Trevannion’s play Leviathan, performed as part of the ground-breaking new writing series coming to Wales for the first time, A Play, A Pie and A Pint, Sherman Cymru are thrilled to have launched an exciting new opportunity for fresh home grown talent to work with the company.

TAITH is the new Sherman Cymru initiative that will provide new and emerging writers with the opportunity to get advice and feedback on their scripts and hone their writing skills, as well as see their work on the stage.

Artistic Associate, Gethin Evans said, “We are extremely pleased to be launching Taith - a unique opportunity to engage with new writing and to offer the vital development that is necessary. We will work with writers to support them in their journey with the extremely exciting opportunity to showcase their work in front of an audience.”

TAITH will be the first point of contact to develop a relationship with Sherman Cymru as a writer. Twice a year Sherman Cymru will invite submissions for 10 minute plays, in Welsh or English, on a specific theme, style or subject – challenging the writer to show their talent concisely.

Sherman Cymru’s script reading panel, which is made up of a range of established Welsh and Wales based professionals including writer’s Kelly Jones and Sherman Cymru’s Playwright in Residence Katherine Chandler; Sherman Cymru’s Associate Artist Producer John Williams; Sherman Cymru’s Associate Artist: Director Mared Swain and Pluen founder Elgan Rhys, will be reading all of the submissions and the Sherman Cymru Creative Team selecting the final three.

The panel will be looking for bold, inventive and original writers who can appeal and connect to modern audiences. The three that show most potential will then be developed with Sherman Cymru’s Creative Team. This will be an intensive period of development, which will nourish the writer and the play.

The final three chosen scripts will then be performed at a one off vibrant and exciting evening celebrating new Welsh and Wales based work. Following this will be an open discussion with the audience regarding the three pieces of work.

The first theme for TAITH is taken from Gary Owen’s outstanding new play Iphigenia in Splott, that will be produced by Sherman Cymru this May, and in light of the forthcoming General Election, use the theme of Social Uprising as the spark the imagination. Send Sherman Cymru your bold, exciting and engaging 10 minute plays for TAITH by 12noon on 20 April 2015 on email only to literary@shermancymru.co.uk. More details will also be available shortly at www.shermancymru.co.uk.
