A true story of love, art, history and fish balls

Theatr Iolo will be bringing breadandcircuses storytelling hit Wot? No Fish!! to the Sherman Theatre from 27-30 May after it captivated audiences at the 2013 Unity Festival and gained international acclaim.

Wot? No Fish!! appeared at the Sherman Theatre in 2013 and has since then the show has performed to sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and on international tours around Australia and Europe. The show mesmerised audiences who were enthralled by this extraordinary chronicle of East London Jewish family life. Now audiences have a second chance to see this beautiful production back at the Sherman.
In 1926 shoemaker Ab Solomons drew a doodle on the wage-packet he gave to his wife Celie. Throughout their marriage, right up until 1982, Ab developed his art, drawing a wage-packet picture every week for Celie.

These pictures chronicle Ab and Celie’s family life, through ups and downs, with great wit and warmth and with a blistering honesty. From falling in love to quarrels about fish balls, audiences are taken on a funny and moving journey against the backdrop of a changing city.
Following success at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013, Wot? No Fish!! has toured extensively, including to Battersea Arts Centre, the Boston ICA, Sydney Festival and Melbourne Malthouse. It was named as one of critic Lyn Gardner’s (The Guardian) Top Ten shows of 2014 and won Danny the Brian Way Playwriting Award.

Now bread&circuses bring his story to life on stage in this captivating 75 minute performance. Every picture tells a story and Braverman shares these eloquent portraits of love and of a marriage, while sharing out traditional fishballs.

Danny’s heartwarming performance has been seen all over the world with audiences waiting to share their own experiences. Danny will even be visiting Great Uncle Ab’s retirement home in the next few weeks to retell this adorable story and to hear and share their own memories.

Audiences have been so moved by the powerful storytelling experience that Danny often speaks to audiences after the show about their own memories.
Theatr Iolo presents breadandcircuses and Danny Braverman’s Wot? No Fish!! at the Sherman Theatre on Wednesday 27, Friday 29 and Saturday 30 May, 7.30pm and Thursday 28 and Saturday May, 2.30pm.
