The money is in addition to the £26.8 million already announced for the Welsh Language. To kick start the development of a National Welsh Language Theatre the Arts Council has allocated £250,000 this year from its Assembly Government funding. It will also enable two Welsh language productions to take place. The Council has recently advertised for a Management Board for the company. The productions in 2003 will be by Sgript Cymru and Theatr Gwynedd. Sgript Cymru will produce a stage version of Amdani, a play with music and songs derived from Bethan Gwanas’ acclaimed novel and television series and Theatr Gwynedd will produce a main-stage production of Dan-y-Wenallt, based on Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood. The production will coincide with the celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the poet’s death. Jenny Randerson said: " I am delighted to be able to announce additional money that will see the expansion of Welsh language theatre. My Culture strategy Creative Future highlights the need to increase the production capacity of companies in Wales in both languages and specifically refers to our aims to develop proposals for access to Welsh Language theatre. "The additional £1.5 million will enable the Arts Council to establish and run the new company, ensuring that there will be coverage across Wales, taking account of Welsh speaking areas, with a good range of high quality productions. The Theatre Company will also undertake valuable work with Welsh Learners. "The Welsh language is an important part of our national identity and creativity. It is therefore essential that we create as many opportunities as possible for people to see high quality theatre through the medium of English and Welsh. This new money will help us achieve that aim." Notes: The £250,000 set aside in this year’s budget will allow two productions in this financial year (£100,000 each) with £50,000 for initial start up costs for the Commissioning Company. ACW has set up a steering committee and have agreed a vision statement for the new company, draft Memorandum and Articles for the new company, and, in mid November the advertisement for Chair and Board for the new company was placed in the press. Procedures following the Nolan Principles to appoint the board will take place and it is anticipated that the Board will be established by January 2003. |
