August 012 return to Chapter with premiere of new French dark comedy ‘Yuri’ which will be performed in Welsh and English This October, award nominated theatre company August 012 will premiere contemporary French playwright Fabrice Melquiot’s play Yuri. Directed by Mathilde Lopez (Tonypandemonium, Caligula, Serious Money, Pornography, Robert Zucco), and adapted by Dafydd James (My Name is Sue, Llwyth, The Village Social) Yuri will run at Chapter 8-17 October 2015. Starring Carys Eleri (Parch) Ceri Murphy (Hinterland) and introducing Guto Wynne Davies.

The play is a farcical dark comedy about infertility, scrabble, sex, the state of the world and the stranger in your living room.

Patrick and Adele can’t have children. And then Yuri appears. But who is Yuri? Why is he here? Is he dangerous? Is he Russian?

Director Mathilde Lopez comments:
“This is a very complex and courageous piece of writing that oscillates between farce, absurd, insult and obscenity. It asks deeply uncomfortable questions about having children and loving them and sex, exposing unfathomable fears and taboos while dipping in and out of stupidity and genius.
When I struggled to have children, this was the most intelligent, nasty, hilarious and honest read I encountered. I still don’t really know what to make of it except that it is important and urgent to stage.”

Dafydd James comments:
“I love the boldness and audacity of Melquiot's writing: how it constantly pushes the boundaries of what is permissible to articulate. He totally gets away with it though because he writes with such wit, and his social observations so acute, the play is simultaneously politically prescient and highly entertaining. As someone going through the adoption process myself at the moment, its cultural/biological themes are particularly resonant. It’s also fascinating how translating the play reflects its exploration of difference: working with French, English and Welsh means I get to negotiate the similarities, differences and gaps between cultures.

Yuri runs between 8 and 17 October
