Courtesy of the The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, Cardiff will be treated to two of the most popular Savoy operas of all time. HMS Pinafore comes to the New Theatre from Tuesday 20 – Wednesday 21 October, followed by The Mikado from Thursday 22 – Saturday 24 October. HMS Pinafore is perhaps the most well-known of the G&S operas, full of witty characters and memorable music. The story takes place aboard HMS Pinafore where Josephine, the Captain’s daughter, falls in love with lower-class sailor Ralph. The two decide to elope but the Captain discovers their plan and hilarity ensues. The opera features catchy songs like I’m Called Little Buttercup, A British Tar and When I Was a Lad. The Mikado is another gloriously topsy-turvy tale featuring a host of unforgettable characters, such as Ko-Ko the Lord High Executioner and Pooh-Bah the sneering Lord High Everything Else. There’s also Nanki-Poo, who has disguised himself to escape from ugly noblewoman Katisha; and Yum-Yum, who happens to be in love with Nanki-Poo. As famous for its classic melodies as it is for its captivating silliness, the show includes classics such as Three Little Maids from School, A Wandering Minstrel and Tit Willow. Gilbert and Sullivan operas have been delighting audiences for almost 150 years with their blend of laugh-out-loud humour and catchy songs, and the New Theatre cannot wait to bring these timeless operas back to Cardiff. HMS Pinafore is at the New Theatre on Tuesday 20 – Wednesday 21 October, and The Mikado on Thursday 22 – Saturday 24 October. Tickets are on sale now from £9.00 - £32.00.
