Shobana Jeyasingh Dance present an extraordinary double bill that pairs Strange Blooms (2013) with a brand new work Material Men at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Thursday 15 October at 7.30pm as part of a UK tour.

Material Men is a virtuoso piece for two dazzling performers of the Indian diaspora, each of whom chose to dance very differently. Contrasts in style between classical and hip hop, as well as similarities of origin, are the starting points for a dynamic exploration of rhythm, location and shared history. Material Men features newly commissioned music by award-winning Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin performed live by The Smith Quartet and Leafcutter John adds his own unique sound design.

Strange Blooms completes the double bill. Inspired by the cellular life of plants it pits the energy of eight dancers against the pulsating music of Gabriel Prokofiev's score. Strange Blooms was originally performed as part of the company’s 25th anniversary celebrations in. This time, the dancers are Avatâra Ayuso, Antonette Dayrit, Sunbee Han, Jason Mabana, Estela Merlos, Wayne Parsons, Jack Thomson and Hian Ruth Voon.
In Material Men, contrasts in style between classical South Asian dance and hip hop are the starting points for Shobana Jeyasingh’s dynamic exploration of rhythm, location and two dancers’ shared history.

In one corner, Sooraj Subramaniam, exceptional bharathanatyam soloist and performer in some of Shobana Jeyasingh’s finest work. In the other, Shailesh Bahoran, phenomenal hip hop dancer and choreographer who made a name for himself with his crew Illusionary Rockaz. Shobana Jeyasingh brings her inimitable choreographic eye to the proceedings.

Material Men features a new score by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, commissioned with funding from the RPS Drummond Fund, which will be performed live by The Smith Quartet. Additional sound design will also be provided by Leafcutter John.

Commissioned by Southbank Centre, Material Men premieres at Queen Elizabeth Hall on 16 September in a double bill with 2013 commission Strange Blooms.
