THE RAILWAY CHILDREN STEAMS AHEAD

Fluellen brings one of the most loved children’s novels to the stage when its new production of THE RAILWAY CHILDREN opens at the Grand Theatre Arts Wing on Wednesday 18th November.

Written by Edith Nesbit in 1905, and never out of print from the day it was published, THE RAILWAY CHILDREN tells the spell-binding story of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis who, when their father is wrongly imprisoned, have to move out of their comfortable London house and live in impoverished circumstances in a cottage in Yorkshire.

Their new home is very close to a railway line and they come to fall in love with the railway, and befriend the amiable station porter Perks and his wife. The story follows them and their mother through a series of great adventures including saving the train from a landslide before arriving at its famously tear-jerking ending

Fluellen`s Artistic Director, Peter Richards, says “A pre-Christmas family show has become somewhat a tradition for Fluellen now, and when it comes to family entertainment, THE RAILWAY CHILDREN would be top of most people’s list. It is an utterly charming and nostalgic period piece written at a time when the romance of steam-railways was at its height”.

Staging THE RAILWAY CHILDREN, though, was always going to be a tough ask. “We did audition a few steam engines” jokes Peter, “but none of them passed our rigorous casting process, so we have decided on a more theatrical method of presenting them on stage.”
