2016 will by the 400th anniversary of the death of the man who is indisputably the world’s greatest playwright.Fluellen Theatre Company was formed in 2000 with an artistic policy of producing largely classical theatre. As such, the plays of Shakespeare are its lynchpin and the company has, to date, staged no less than seventeen Shakespeare plays. It was fitting, then, that Fluellen (in association with the Swansea Grand Theatre) commemorates this major anniversary in a big way. In 2016 Fluellen will be producing * 4 new major productions of Shakespeare plays * 5 specially commissioned short new plays and 2 new full length plays with Shakespeare themes. *The return of Kevin John’s popular one-man show TAFFY SHAKESPEARE. * 4 entertainments about Shakespeare The four major productions have been chosen carefully and attempt to steer a course through Shakespeare’s writing life, and feature an example of each of the major genres of his plays. RICHARD III, a history, is one of his first plays and THE TEMPEST, a romance, is probably his last. Between these are programmed two plays that are chronologically equidistant in time, AS YOU LIKE IT, a comedy, and MACBETH a tragedy. Peter Richards, Fluellen`s Artistic Director, says, “I believe that Shakespeare 400 will be a fitting tribute to the greatest of all playwrights. It is an event that is being funded entirely by private sponsorship and we must thank our major sponsor Peter Lynn & Partners for their terrific support”. And the events start on Thursday 14th January with a Gala Launch Night at the Grand Theatre Arts Wing in Swansea. There will be a performance of Fluellen`s popular revue “Here’s To You Mr Shakespeare!” followed by a buffet. And there is FREE entrance.
