Aberystwyth Arts Centre (THURS JAN 14) hosted the announcement of the shortlists for the Wales Theatre Awards 2016 on Thursday, January 14, 2016.These awards recognise excellence in theatre, dance and opera created and presented in Wales between December 2014 and November 2015. The nominations are made by critics throughout Wales. Wales Theatre Awards director Mike Smith said, “This year there were nominations from 34 critics throughout Wales across genres and media platforms, totalling 593 individual nominations, comprising 334 performers, creative staff (directors, technicians, designers and playwrights) and shows, in English and in Welsh. “What stands out not only from the shortlists but reading through all of the 593 nominations is the massive impact smaller companies, venues, new writers and new talent have made in 2015. There have been superb shows and performances from some of our headline companies and performers yet it was clear that some of the most popular with the critics have been from relative newcomers and smaller budget, intimate shows. “When meeting to discuss the nominations from across the nation, the judges expressed their concern that despite the work of the Wales Theatre Awards reviewers some genres of the performing arts and also venues in some parts of Wales are not receiving as much critical attention as they deserve While we do have reviewers and nominators from all genres and from across Wales we will work even more with venues and art forms in 2016 to help support reviewing which is essential for the health of the arts.” The announcement of the winners of each category will be made an Awards Show on Saturday, January 30 at Sherman Cymru in Cardiff. The Awards are made possible thanks to the work of the judges who painstakingly assess all of the nominations to choose the shortlists and then overall winners, and the generous sponsorship from arts organisations, venues and individuals. This sponsorship also enables the Wales Critics Fund to give financial support to freelance and young critics to attend performances across the nation. The Wales Theatre Awards and the Wales Critics Fund are run by Arts Awards Ltd. The evening is hosted by Nicola Heywood Thomas and Arfon Haines Davies with performances by dancers from Sweetshop Revolution, Welsh soprano Angharad Morgan and singing students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
