Record breaking Christmas audiences at the Sherman Theatre as Christmas 2016 is announced: The Borrowers. |
2015 has seen the Sherman’s most successful Christmas since it’s reopening in 2012. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe became its highest grossing production and alongside this, their co-production with Theatr Iolo, The Princess and The Pea / Y Dywysoges a’r Bysen Fechan Fach has beaten their previous under 7s show record. This has combined to make this Christmas a record breaking success for the Sherman. Having firmly re-established its place as a leading producing house in Wales the Sherman have chosen another sure fire family classic for their Main Stage Christmas production for 2016: The Borrowers. The much loved children’s book written by Mary Norton has captured the imagination of children and families for over 60 years and will now come alive on stage at the Sherman for Christmas 2016. With a combination of live music, wonderful sets, brilliant casts and expert direction Christmas at the Sherman is always guaranteed to delight. This has been evidence by the record numbers of audiences who visited the Sherman this December and the great feedback received by the venue. Last year’s Arabian Nights and The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll, were both hugely successful for the venue, but they have been eclipsed by the sheer demand for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and The Princess and The Pea / Y Dywysoges a’r Bysen Fechan Fach. This news come on the back of a number of recent success stories including the UK Theatre Award for Best New Play for Gary Owen’s Iphigenia in Splott. This production directed by the Sherman’s Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan heads to the National Theatre’s Temporary Theatre space in January before a UK tour, including 2 nights back at the Sherman. The Sherman also recently announced their exciting main spring production Bird, which will be a co-production with Manchester Royal Exchange, written by the Sherman’s playwright-in-residence Katherine Chandler and directed by Rachel O’Riordan. The growing success and reputation of the Sherman continues to establish the venue’s place in the UK theatre scene, driven by the ambition of its Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan, who directed The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
