Gary Owen’s New Play Opens at RWCMD

This commission has been written by Gary Owen (Crazy Gary's Mobile Disco), in partnership with Sgript Cymru, and is Owen’s first Welsh-language project.

The cast of two features third-year RWCMD BA Acting students: Mared Swain from Llantrisant, and Iola Hughes from Abergele. Amser Canser has been written especially for Mared and Iola, and is directed by Jamie Garven with Catrin Llwyd.

The story is a very simple one. Two girls gradually become friends during fag breaks (the 'cancer time') from their office jobs - they work in a call centre. Jamie Garven describes Amser Canser as "intimate with no big gestures, the quality being in the writing".

He says through Gary Owen's provocative script, the audience will become increasingly and emotionally involved as the play takes on a universal issue - one which is not yet divulged.

This annual tour by RWCMD gives the public the opportunity of seeing one of the top UK drama schools in action. The College's unique position as the only drama school that offers vocational training through the medium of English and Welsh makes this play a must for anyone interested in contemporary drama.

Tour details: Bute Theatre, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Tuesday 11th - Friday 14th February) at 7.30pm; Theatr Elli, Llanelli (Monday 17th) at 7.30pm; Theatr y Werin, Aberystwyth (Wednesday 19th) at 7.30pm and Theatr Colwyn, Colwyn Bay (Friday 21st) at 7.30pm.
