Gagglebabble, The Other Room and Theatr Clwyd present Sinners Club, a new music-theatre show about the last woman to be hanged in Britain

Gagglebabble, The Other Room and Theatr Clwyd present Sinners Club, a new music-theatre show about the last woman to be hanged in Britain Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room, located in Porter’s and winner of The Stage’s Fringe Theatre of the Year Award 2016, will open its Spring ‘Outliers’ season with a new ‘gig theatre’ show from Gagglebabble called Sinners Club.

A co-production between The Other Room, Gagglebabble (Wonderman, The Forsythe Sisters, The Bloody Ballad) and Theatr Clwyd, Sinners Club by Lucy Rivers is a gin-soaked, blood and guts, live recording session/gig. Exploring through song, the darker side of human nature, while careering through the life, loves and confessions of Rhyl girl Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Writer and composer and co-founder of Gagglebabble Lucy Rivers comments:

“I always seem to be drawn to a good dark story, and so was immediately struck by the tragic life of Ruth Ellis, and the sequence of events that led to her committing this cold murder. She’s the ultimate anti-heroine, with passions and dreams and flaws and vulnerabilities like the rest of us, living in a time which gave women of her class very little opportunity. I hope that our signature gig-theatre style will be a fitting and fun way to scratch beneath the surface of respectability and explore the dark underbelly of human desires and capabilities.”

The production runs at The Other Room Tue 7 - Fri 24 February before transferring to Theatr Clwyd Thu 2 – Sat 18 March. Artistic Director of Theatr Clwyd, Tamara Harvey, comments:

“We’re delighted to be making Sinners Club with Gagglebabble and The Other Room. Lucy Rivers (of Gagglebabble) was our first Writer in Residence so it’s hugely exciting to be continuing that relationship, whilst Kate Wasserberg (The Other Room’s Artistic Director) made the beautiful Insignificance for our autumn 2016 season. Sinners Club has particular resonance for us, as it tells the compelling story of Ruth Ellis, who was originally a local girl from Rhyl, and I know that Gagglebabble will bring their unique blend of musical wit, theatrical vibrancy and fierce humanity to her extraordinary story.”

Sinners Club will be directed by Titas Halder, writer of the closing show of the ‘Outliers’ season, Escape The Scaffold (Wed 19 April – Sat 6 May), who also directed St. Nicholas and Silence in The Other Room’s 2016 Insomnia season.

The Outliers (Spring 2017) season is The Other Room’s most ambitious to date, and also sees Artistic Director Kate Wasserberg directing Seanmhair by Hywel John (Tue 14 March – Sat 1 April).
