Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room continue Outliers season with Seanmhair Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room, located in Porter’s and winner of The Stage’s Fringe Theatre of the Year Award 2016, continues its Spring ‘Outliers’ season with a new play from writer Hywel John called Seanmhair, running Tue 14 March – Sat 1 April.

A chance meeting between two children on the streets of Edinburgh leads to a terrible reckoning, leaving Jenny and Tommy forever bound together by blood and fate. Brutal and beautiful, Seanmhair (Scots Gaelic for Grandmother and pronounced ‘Shen-a-var’) glimmers and cuts like a jewel, fusing raw epic romance with guttural urban poetry to tell the story of a secret generational legacy of love, violence and fury.

The Other Room’s Artistic Director Kate Wasserberg will direct the play, written by Hywel John (Pieces - 4 stars in The Guardian, and Rose – 4 stars in The Telegraph, The Times and The Evening Standard). Kate comments:

“Hywel’s a writer who is very important to me. I directed his first play Pieces at Theatr Clwyd years ago, which we then took to Brits Off Broadway in New York. Hywel sent me this play a while back, it just bewitched me and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. It’s Wuthering Heights meets Irvine Welsh, about two children in the fifties – a very poor docker’s son and a wealthy banker’s daughter – who meet on the streets of Edinburgh, fall in love and engage in a physical love affair. An intensely passionate, fated obsession with each other leads to a series of incredibly dangerous and significant moments for them. Jenny’s Seanmhair (grandmother) looms really large over the story, and it’s about the idea that trauma can get passed down generations, but also that passion and love leave an imprint on you that makes you open to huge cosmic forces.”

Seanmhair’s cast includes Hannah McPake (Wonderman, The Knight of the Burning Pestle, The Bloody Ballad), Molly Vevers (The Sleeping Beauties, Ross and Rachel) and Sian Howard (Much Ado About Nothing, Ghosts, Copenhagen, Arms and the Man).
