MOLE, RAT, BADGER, TOAD – AND A MAGIC PORRIDGE POT TO CREATE AN EXTRA-SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SEASON AT SHERMAN THEATRE |
In recent years Sherman Theatre has firmly established its Christmas productions as some of Cardiff’s essential seasonal treats. Thousands of school children and families have been spell-bound with the delightful mix of engaging story-telling, brilliant performances, fabulous sets and costumes (all created at Sherman Theatre by the talented team backstage), and the warm welcome from the staff who are dedicated to making every visit enjoyable. In the main house this year Sherman Theatre will present Kenneth Grahame’s classic book The Wind in The Willows in a new adaptation by Mike Kenny. Mike is a prolific and popular writer for young people, and with shows like The Railway Children at London’s King’s Cross Station, his work has been seen by tens-of-thousands of people from across the world. It will be directed by Lee Lyford whose recent work includes The Snow Queen for Bristol Old Vic. In The Wind in The Willows, Mole discovers the Wide World beyond his home; but Rat just wants to mess about in boats; and for Toad it’s one fad after another – until he discovers cars and lands himself in bother; wise old Badger does his best to keep order, and as the friends head out on their adventures of a lifetime, he knows home will always be calling them back. In the studio, The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud y Crochan Uwd is the specially devised show for the under 7s and their families which will be performed at separate shows in either English or Welsh. Originally written by The Brothers Grimm, this adaptation is by Alun Saunders (whose adaptation of The Emperor’s New Clothes / Dillad Newydd yr Ymerawdwr was widely praised in 2016). In the show, set in a village on the edge of the Enormous Forest, Aggie is always trying to help her mother and the other villagers, but often just ends up making a mess. One day she is given a magic pot which makes tasty porridge when she taps it and says ‘Cook little pot, cook’. But when her mother can’t stop the pot, the town is filled with porridge – and Aggie’s help is really needed. Both The Wind in The Willows and The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud y Crochan Uwd will overflow with music and song, fun and laughter and feature stunning sets and beautiful costumes, creating magical experiences for everyone this Christmas. Rachel O’Riordan, Sherman Theatre’s Artistic Director said “It’s wonderful that so many people choose to spend festive family time with us here at Sherman Theatre. We love creating work for younger and older audiences alike, and the Christmas shows bring people together of all ages which makes for such a special atmosphere. Christmas is often someone’s first experience of coming to the theatre and it’s a privilege to create work that sparks imaginations and creates memories that last a lifetime.” The Wind in The Willows plays at Sherman Theatre 1 – 30 December 2017; The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud y Crochan Uwd plays at Sherman Theatre 3 & 4 November and 25 November – 30 December 2017. And, as in previous years, audiences across south Wales will get the opportunity to see the show on tour as it will visit Merthyr Tydfil, Ystradgynlais, Ponterdawe, Newport, Blackwood, Pontypridd, Maesteg, Porthcawl and St Donat, with some additional venues to be confirmed. @SHERMANTHEATRE SHERMANTHEATRE.CO.UK #ChristmasAtTheSherman CHRISTMAS AT THE SHERMAN THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS Sherman Theatre Senghennydd Road, Cardiff, CF24 4YE 1 – 30 December 2017 - times vary Tickets £16 - £26 Half price for children & under 25s Schools £8 - £7.50 before 30 September shermantheatre.co.uk | 029 2064 6900 Written by Kenneth Grahame Adaptation Mike Kenny Director Lee Lyford Designer Simon Kenny Composer Conor Mitchell Lighting Designer Kevin Treacy Sound Designer Ian Barnard Musical Director Gareth Wyn Griffiths Casting Kay Magson CDG THE MAGIC PORRIDGE POT / HUD Y CROCHAN UWD Sherman Theatre Senghennydd Road, Cardiff, CF24 4YE 3 & 4 November, 25 November – 30 December 2017 - times vary Tickets £9 Schools £6.50 shermantheatre.co.uk | 029 2064 6900 Written by The Brothers Grimm A new version by Alun Saunders Composer & Musical Director Dylan Jones Designer Katie Hart SHERMAN THEATRE ON TOUR THE MAGIC PORRIDGE POT / HUD Y CROCHAN UWD 6 & 7 November: Soar Centre, Merthyr Tydfil 8 November: The Welfare, Ystradgynlais 9 November: Borough Theatre, Abergavenny 10 November: Pontardawe Arts Centre 11 November: The Riverfront, Newport 15 November: Blackwood Miners Institute 20 November: Gartholwg Centre, Pontypridd 22 November: Maesteg Town Hall 23 November: Porthcawl Pavilion 24 November: St Donat's Arts CentreMOLE, RAT, BADGER, TOAD – A CHROCHAN UWD I GREU TYMOR NADOLIGAIDD ARBENNIG IAWN YN THEATR Y SHERMAN Dros y blynyddoedd, mae cynyrchiadau Nadolig Theatr y Sherman wedi datblygu’n un o uchafbwyntiau Nadoligaidd hanfodol Caerdydd. Mae miloedd o ysgolion a theuluoedd wedi cael eu hudo gan gymysgedd hyfryd o storïau, perfformiadau rhagorol, setiau a gwisgoedd arbennig (a grëwyd gan dîm cefn llwyfan talentog Theatr y Sherman), a chroeso cynnes y staff sy’n ymroddedig i sicrhau bod pob ymweliad yn un i’w fwynhau. Mae eleni yn arbennig iawn. Yn y brif theatr, bydd Theatr y Sherman yn cyflwyno llyfr clasurol Kenneth Grahame The Wind in The Willows mewn addasiad newydd gan Mike Kenny. Mae Mike yn awdur toreithiog a phoblogaidd ar gyfer pobl ifanc, a gyda sioeau fel The Railway Children yn King’s Cross Theatre, mae miloedd ar filoedd o bobl ledled y byd wedi gweld ei waith. Caiff y sioe ei chyfarwyddo gan Lee Lyford y mae ei waith diweddar yn cynnwys The Snow Queen ar gyfer Bristol Old Vic. Yn The Wind in The Willows, mae Mole yn darganfod y Byd Mawr y tu hwnt i’w gartref; ond mae Rat eisiau chwarae gyda’i gychod; ac ar gyfer Toad, mae bywyd yn un mympwy ar ôl y llall- nes iddo ddarganfod ceir a mynd i drafferthion; mae Badger yn gwneud ei orau i gadw trefn ar bethau, ac wrth i’r ffrindiau fwynhau eu hanturiaethau, mae’n gwybod y byddant yn hiraethu am eu cartrefi o hyd. Yn y stiwdio, The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud y Crochan Uwd yw’r sioe a ddyfeisiwyd yn arbennig ar gyfer plant dan 7 oed a’u teuluoedd, gyda pherfformiadau ar wahân yn Gymraeg neu’n Saesneg. Ysgrifennwyd y stori wreiddiol gan y Brodyr Grimm, ac mae’r addasiad hwn gan Alun Saunders (y derbyniodd ei addasiad o The Emperor’s New Clothes / Dillad Newydd yr Ymerawdwr ganmoliaeth fawr yn 2016). Yn y sioe, a leolwyd mewn pentref ar gyrion y Goedwig Anferth, mae Aggie bob amser yn ceisio helpu ei mam a’r pentrefwyr eraill, ond yn aml y cyfan mae’n llwyddo ei wneud yw llanast. Un diwrnod rhoddir crochan hud iddi sy’n gwneud uwd blasus pan mae’n ei daro ac yn dweud ‘Coginia crochan bach, coginia’. Ond pan nad yw ei mam yn gallu stopio’r crochan, caiff y dref ei llenwi ag uwd – ac mae angen cymorth Aggie ar bawb. Mae The Wind in The Willows a The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud y Crochan Uwd yn llawn cerddoriaeth a chaneuon, hwyl a chwerthin ac yn cynnwys setiau a gwisgoedd prydferth, gan greu profiadau hudol ar gyfer pawb yn ystod Nadolig eleni. Dywedodd Rachel O’Riordan, Cyfarwyddwr Artistig Theatr y Sherman “Mae’n hyfryd bod cymaint o bobl yn dewis treulio amser teuluol dros y Nadolig gyda ni yn Theatr y Sherman. Rydym yn caru creu gwaith ar gyfer cynulleidfaoedd iau a hŷn fel ei gilydd, ac mae’r sioeau Nadolig yn dod â phobl o bob oedran ynghyd sy’n creu awyrgylch arbennig. Yn aml, bydd pobl yn profi’r theatr am y tro cyntaf yn ystod cyfnod y Nadolig, ac mae’n fraint creu gwaith sy’n sbarduno’r dychymyg ac yn creu atgofion sy’n para oes.” Mae The Wind in The Willows yn chwarae yn Theatr y Sherman 1 – 30 Rhagfyr 2017; mae The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud y Crochan Uwd yn chwarae yn Theatr y Sherman 3 & 4 Tachwedd a 25 Tachwedd – 30 Rhagfyr 2017. Ac, yn yr un modd â blynyddoedd blaenorol, caiff cynulleidfaoedd ar draws de Cymru y cyfle i weld y sioe ar daith wrth iddi ymweld â Merthyr Tudful, Ystradgynlais, Pontardawe, Casnewydd, Coed-duon, Pontypridd, Maesteg, Porthcawl a Sain Dunwyd, gyda rhai lleoliadau ychwanegol i’w cadarnhau. @SHERMANTHEATRE SHERMANTHEATRE.CO.UK #ChristmasAtTheSherman @THEATRYSHERMAN SHERMANTHEATRE.CO.UK #NadoligYnYSherman |
