The Other Room continues Autumn season with Welsh premiere ofMy Name Is Rachel Corrie |
Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room, located in Porter’s and winner of The Stage’s Fringe Theatre of the Year Award 2016, continues its Autumn/Winter 2017 season with the Welsh premiere of My Name is Rachel Corrie, which will run Tuesday 10 – Saturday 21 October. Former Associate Director of The Other Room Chelsey Gillard (co-Director of the award-winning Constellation Street) will direct My Name is Rachel Corrie as the debut production of her new company Graphic. My Name is Rachel Corrie, which premiered in 2005 at London’s Royal Court Theatre, follows an impassioned American student from her safe childhood bedroom in Washington to the moment she stood between a civilian house and an armoured bulldozer in The Gaza Strip. Curated from Corrie’s own writings (by Katherine Viner and Alan Rickman), her words sing with idealism, eloquence and most of all hope. Chelsey comments: “On my 12th birthday Rachel Corrie landed in Palestine. Much like her I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, but ‘wandering poet’ and ‘spiderman’ were shared items on our lists. Again, like her I volunteered overseas at the age of 23; we were both stirred by the injustices we saw in the world around us. But, unlike her, I was never pushed to lay my life on the line in an attempt to right those injustices. I am fascinated by what can push a person to make that sacrifice, especially now, when more and more people around the world are forced from their homes as a result of war.” Tickets for My Name Is Rachel Corrie at The Other Room are available now from www.otherroomtheatre.com.
