ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE Welsh dance company looking for performers to take part in production inspired by refugee crisi3 October / Hydref |
This October, award-winning dance company Gwyn Emberton Dance will tour a new theatre performance entitled Raft. The production, that will visit seven venues across Wales, is looking for local performers to take part and help the company to challenge audiences on how it might feel to live far away from home, in a land that they do not recognise, hearing a language they do not understand. Company Artistic Director Gwyn Emberton says; “I am excited to be able to invite local people to perform with us next month at the seven Welsh tour venues that we’ll be visiting. They will join our talented cast of five international dancers on stage that will help us question and challenge one of the biggest issues in the world today.” Inspired by a newspaper article describing the Calais refugees as ‘wild animals in a forest’ and who ‘at night sleep in stinking squalor’, Emberton tackles the subject head on and his production Raft will challenge audiences to look at themselves and ask ‘what if it was me?’ Emberton continues; “you don’t need dance experience to apply, the door is open to anyone who wants to take part. There will be a workshop that will be held in the town of the performance, participants will learn about the making of Raft, and explore physical themes and ideas behind the production, led by company member Lara Ward. They will also meet the rest of the local cast and members of the company, it should be an exciting experience for all involved.” Gwyn Emberton hopes that his new production will spark a debate about how we talk about and perceive others, perhaps offering a different perspective to how we see refugees and asylum seekers, and migration in general. Any groups or individuals who are interested in taking part should contact Lara Ward at lara_ward@live.co.uk. What’s more the company is delighted that each venue on the national tour will provide free tickets to asylum seekers and refugees who find themselves far from home, in Wales. Individuals or groups who would like to register their interest in coming to see the production should contact the company directly on judith.hughes@live.com or by calling Judi on 07968 111638, as tickets will be limited. Raft opens at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 3rd of October visiting Theatr Brycheiniog (05 October), The Stiwt in Rhosllanerchrugog (07 October), Ffwrnes Llanelli (10 October), The Riverfront Newport (19 October), The Hafren Newtown (24 October) and Galeri Caernarfon (27 October). Tickets for the show in Aberystwyth are available from the Arts Centre Box Office on 01970 62 32 32 or online at www.aberystwythartscentre.co.uk |
