The Other Room continues Autumn season with Fio’s production of Death and the Maiden |
Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room, located in Porter’s and winner of The Stage’s Fringe Theatre of the Year Award 2016, continues its Autumn/Winter 2017 season with Fio’s production of Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden, which runs Tuesday 31 October – Saturday 11 November. Olivier award-winning play Death And The Maiden tells the thrilling story of Paulina Salas, a torture victim of a brutal military dictatorship. Paulina is full of fear, gripped by a secret terror that she only shares with her husband, Gerardo. One night, a kindly stranger, Dr Miranda, arrives at their door late at night unannounced, forcing Paulina to confront her deepest fears face-to-face. Ariel Dorfman's spectacular thriller confronts an audience's understanding of the nature of truth and honesty, begging an answer to the question of whether democracy can ever truly heal the wounds of dictatorship. Fio is a Cardiff based theatre company working across the UK, bringing world-class socio-political stories to local audiences. Death and the Maiden will directed by Abdul Shayek, who also directed the highly acclaimed The Mountaintop, first produced at The Other Room last year and currently touring. Abdul comments: “What are the repercussions for those who have been victims during a military dictatorship and how does democratic rule affect these people? How does a population marred with violence and more importantly individuals learn to forgive and forget? For me, this piece goes beyond exploring rebuilding a nation, and asks some big questions about forgiveness on a personal scale.” Tickets for Death and the Maiden at The Other Room are available now from www.otherroomtheatre.com.
