Arts & Business Cymru Arts Sponsorship Seminar

Arts & Business Cymru are holding a day long seminar on 03/04/03 at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea.

The seminar is designed to raise understanding of sponsorship and to give practical guidance to arts organisations on how best to go about obtaining and developing it . The day is aimed at those who have no sponsorship experience as well as those who wish to refresh themselves of the fundamental principles and practice of this area.

Finance Wales Fast Track Loan Scheme

Finance Wales have announced a new Fast Track scheme to ensure that clients seeking small loans - 1,000 to 10,000 will receive a yes or no answer to their completed application forms on the spot.

The finance Wales loan scheme is open to small to medium-sized businesses (SME) with fewer than 250 employees where the annual turnover does not exceed 40million (25million) and the balance sheet total does not exceed 27million (17million).
Finance Wales also expects a demonstration of:
- the commitment of the business stakeholders
- a well-thought through business plan
- that you have taken advice from independent business and/or financial advisors
- that you are clear on your need for funding and its benefits and are ready for an investor
- the potential for growth
- the potential to create employment
- that you have considered additional investment as part of the wider funding package
- that have considered equal opportunity, environmental and Information Communication Technology issues

Finance Wales has a target of assisting 4,000 small firms and sees the new micro-loan system as one means of ensuring that new and small enterprises across Wales have their needs met. It is anticipated that 400 new and small ventures will be assisted during the course of the next financial year.

C4 New Writers Programme

Ideal World Productions is looking for new writers to submit ideas for a season of 30 minute films on Channel 4. Applicants should not have any primetime drama credits but be interested in producing work which challenges the conventional story form on a limited budget.

The strand will be predominantly, but not exclusively, young and urban stories.

CPR Workshops 2003 - programme amendment

The Centre for Performance Research Spring training programme has been amended as follows:

Voice Retreat with Natalka Polovynka has been relocated to the Castle Theatre in Aberystwyth .

Participants are also offered the option to do a two-day weekend workshop (Saturday and Sunday) in addition to the full 4 days, finishing on Tuesday.

The cost of the four day Voice Retreat (excluding accommodation and meals) is now 95 (first two days 50).

S4C Careers Website

S4C has launched a new website designed to encourage young people to gain experience of the television industry at the highest level.

The site provides information on work experience and funding opportunities which are available to anyone over the age of 16. Priority is given to those who wish to work in the medium of Welsh.

The website also offers details regarding bursaries for students undertaking post graduate courses in media based courses. S4C offer up to half the total cost of the course and full details are available on the website.

The website also lists colleges in Wales that offer courses related to the television industry.

Cyfle Seek TV Producers of the Future

Cyfle, the national training company for film, television and interactive media are organising workshops throughout Wales where young people interested in becoming Television Producers can learn about the television production process.

The workshops will take place on:
13/04/03 at Cyfle, Caernarfon
14/04/03 at University of Wales Aberystwyth
15/04/03 at Coleg Llandrillo yn Rhos
17/04/03 at Chapter in Cardiff

Each workshop will last all day and give participants the opportunity to learn about the industry and voice any queries they have about the industry. At each workshop students will be split into groups and allocated a subject they will discuss form the point of view of someone creating a news item, a documentary and a drama.

Workshops will be lead by Cyfle Training Director Richard Morris Jones and experienced Director/Producer Vaughan Williams.

Following the workshops 18 people will be chosen to attend one of two summer schools. One is for non-Welsh speakers at the Urdds Gwersyll Glanllyn near Bala, which will take place at the end of June. The Welsh speaking group will attend the course at the end of August during the National Eisteddfod.

During this time participants will be aided by experienced producers and will create a television programme from the drawing board to the finished article.

NESTA Fellowship Awards

NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) provides numerous awards fellowships that are designed to support growing talent from the areas of science, art and technology.

Awards range from 3,000 to 75,000 and the duration can last up to 5 years.

The awards are open to people who have an established record of achievement at the highest level of their field and are looking to take a new career direction.

Applicants are chosen through a UK wide panel of nominators who are experienced to identify emerging talent. All nominators remain anonymous and the list of nominators is refreshed on a regular basis.

NESTA recently piloted an award scheme called Dream Time Fellowships, which is for exceptional achievers who have at least 10 years experience in their field. Due to the success of this award NESTA are running it again in early to mid 2003.

Coleg Harlech Short Courses

Coleg Harlech is providing a wide range of arts based short courses throughout 2003. The experienced staff are offering students a variety of creative courses that last up to one week. Students will have the option of staying in the halls of residence which are fully equipped with wash basins in all rooms and a bath and shower on each floor. The halls also include laundrette facilities and communal lounge.

The courses are held from 31/03/03 until 06/09/03 and last between 3-8 days. Courses on offer include digital photography, creative drawing, radio presentation and introduction to photoshop.

Other courses are available and prices range from 135 to 295, these include accommodation and tuition fees. Non resident students can pay 50 per course.

Some students will be eligible for bursaries which will provide a contribution towards the overall cost of the course. Bursaries are not available to those with equivalent or higher qualifications that those available on the course or if the applicant is 20 years or younger during the time of the course.

The facilities offered by Coleg Harlech are available for group bookings and the colleges facilities can be used for independent teaching groups.

E-Commerce Awards 2003

The fifth annual E-Commerce Awards have been launched. The awards, which are run by UK Online for Business and InterForum are designed to recognise and reward those organisations that have demonstrated excellence through the use of the internet and other information and communications technologies.

The Awards are open to all UK businesses (limited or otherwise), public bodies, registered charities and non-profit organisations with fewer than 250 employees, based in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The Awards are run on a regional basis in four categories, with the regional winner of each category going forward to a national category final.

The four categories are:
- E-Business
- E-Trading
- E-Business Start-Up
- Voluntary & Community

The overall national winner will be drawn from the winners of the National Awards and National Innovation Awards.

The National Innovation Awards are new for 2003 and recognise organisations that can demonstrate innovative and sustained use of technology to improve their business through:

- Mobile & Wireless Technology
- Broadband Communications
- Advanced Supply Chain Integration
- Use of TMB Accredited Advice

All regional award winners and runners-up will be automatically entered to the judging process for these new categories. National Innovation Award winners will each receive a cash prize of 8,000.
