Sweetshop Revolution proudly announces the UK tour of their latest production ‘BEAUTiFUL’
Aberystwyth Arts Centre: Wednesday 21 March Created with five distinctly gifted young female dancers, the choreographer-director Sally Marie’s new work promises to be a passionate, vivid journey into women’s experiences of sex, love, desire and power

Sweetshop Revolution’s fourth full-length dance-theatre work ‘BEAUTiFUL’ explores love and sexuality from a female perspective: what’s fantasised about, desired and deemed permissible within a complex web of contemporary social structures, personal expectations and cultural histories.

At a time when people can choose to be gender-fluid or polyamorous, ‘BEAUTiFUL’ is asking how women (and, by implication, men) are experiencing relationships, sexuality and their bodies right now. How do we love – or make love – in 2018, and how has that changed?

Hand-picked from among the 775 dancers auditioned by Sally Marie, the cast of ‘BEAUTiFUL’ both celebrates and questions female solidarity while taking the attributes, behaviours and roles generally associated with girls and women to a more truthful and liberating place.

As Sally Marie says, ‘More than ever I believe that it’s vital for women to communicate “the female gaze” creatively. The five extraordinary performers in this show plunge us into their private worlds, slicing through the tissued layers of elusive truths and false assumptions by which many of us live. We’re driven to look seriously and humorously – but always closely – at how women are objectified on stage and in the wider world. Our collective purpose? To generate outrageous pleasure, inspire insight and provoke debate.’

About the company
Sweetshop Revolution’s aim is to make dance-theatre that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. As Sally Marie states, ‘We want to communicate with people on many different levels by exploring the complexity of human relationships and the stories behind them; juxtaposing the everyday world with broader philosophical questions; and creating a place where ideas and feelings are as important as steps.’

Sally Marie has danced for numerous companies and choreographers including Protein Dance, Jasmin Vardimon, Sean Tuan John, Maresa von Stockert’s Tilted Productions, Frauke Requardt, H2Dance and Deja Donne. She was twice voted Best Female Performer by Dance Europe and twice nominated for Best Female Performance by The National Dance Awards, alongside a Spotlight Award nomination for new talent. Choreographically she won The New Adventures Choreography Award 2013 and the Children’s Award 2014 from Sadler’s Wells and The Place. She is currently a ‘Playtime Artist’ at Pavilion Dance South West.

Her production ’I loved you and I loved you’ was nominated for a Welsh Theatre Award for dance in 2015, and Sweetshop Revolution was nominated as Best Independent Company at The National Dance Awards 2016.

‘BEAUTiFUL’ will be at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Wednesday 21 March. Tickets are available from the Arts Centre Box Office on 01970 62 32 32 or online at www.aberystwythartscentre.co.uk
