ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE - THE FRACTAL CLOCK 06.04.18 - 05.05.18

ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE - THE FRACTAL CLOCK 06.04.18 - 05.05.18 Richard Downing’s Fractal Clock installation is remade in glass and presented for the first time in Gallery 1 of Aberystwyth Arts Centre from the 6th April – 5th May.

Seeing is believing as 81 rotating triangles of glass make a delicate journey of shifting patterns towards a moment of resolution, once every sixty minutes. ‘A dance of holes across the stage of an hour’, The Fractal Clock offers a gentle and mesmerising re-encounter with time, space, place and perspective.

In 2015 Richard Downing presented his original slate version of the Fractal Clock at the Castle Theatre in Aberystwyth after five years developing his initial ideas with Professor Richard Taylor, whose research investigates the nature, reception and application of fractal patterns.

Glass triangles, that rotate at individual speeds to create patterns, are perfectly placed to manipulate perspective and, from a specific vantage point in the gallery, appear to create a classical 2D fractal pattern. This pattern is one that can be found throughout history, culture and nature. This modified, glass version transforms the experience of the clock as the play of light over the triangles creates additional patterns on the clock and the surfaces around it.

“The Fractal Clock is intended to be a light, quiet presence, rewarding some attention rather than demanding or commanding it, but it is a presence which ‘tells’ time in a way that may have some fullness, or truth.” Richard Downing 2012

Richard Downing, who was the former Artistic Director for the interdisciplinary performance group U-Man Zoo, is also a lecturer and tutor in Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University where he was partially responsibility for the introduction of degree schemes in Scenography and Theatre Design at Aberystwyth. His research has led to an interest in interdisciplinary collcollaboration across arts/science boundaries.

For one month only the glass clock will be on display to the public. There will also be an opportunity to book hour long private slots to encounter the clock without distraction.

Mae gosodwaith Richard Downing, 'Fractal Clock', wedi'i ail greu mewn gwydr ac fe'i cyflwynir am y tro cyntaf yn Oriel 1, Canolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth o 6ed Ebrill – 5 Mai.

Gweld yw credu wrth i 81 o drionglau gwydr cylchdroadol wneud siwrnai ysgafn o batrymau symudol tuag at ennyd o eglurdeb, unwaith bob trigain munud. ‘Dawns o dyllau ar draws llwyfan awr', mae'r Fractal Clock yn cynnig ail-gyfarfyddiad addfwyn a swynol gydag amser, gofod, lle a phersbectif.

Yn 2015 cyflwynodd Richard Downing ei fersiwn lechen wreiddiol o'r 'Fractal Clock' yn Theatr y Castell yn Aberystwyth ar ôl pum mlynedd o ddatblygu ei syniadau cynnar gyda'r Athro Richard Taylor sydd wedi gwneud gwaith ymchwil yn ystyried natur, derbyniad a chymhwysiad patrymau ffractal.

Mae trionglau gwydr, sy'n cylchdroi ar gyflymderau unigol er mwyn creu patrymau, yn berffaith ar gyfer trin persbectif, ac o fan penodol yn yr oriel, ymddengys eu bod yn creu patrwm ffractal 2D clasurol. Mae'r patrwm hwn yn un y gellir dod o hyd iddo drwy gydol hanes, diwylliant a natur. Mae'r fersiwn wydr addasedig hon yn trawsffurfio'r profiad o'r cloc wrth i'r golau uwchben y trionglau greu patrymau ychwanegol ar y cloc a'r wynebau o'i gwmpas.

“The Fractal Clock is intended to be a light, quiet presence, rewarding some attention rather than demanding or commanding it, but it is a presence which ‘tells’ time in a way that may have some fullness, or truth.” Richard Downing 2012

Mae Richard Downing, cyn Gyfarwyddwr Artistig y grŵp perfformio rhyngddisgyblaethol U-Man Zoo, hefyd yn ddarlithydd ac yn diwtor mewn Astudiaethau Theatr, Ffilm a Theledu ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth lle 'roedd yn rhannol gyfrifol am gyflwyno cynlluniau gradd mewn Senograffeg a Dylunio Theatr. Mae ei ymchwil wedi arwain at ddiddordeb mewn cydweithrediad rhyngddisgyblaethol ar draws ffiniau'r celfyddydau/gwyddoniaeth.

Am un mis yn unig bydd y cloc gwydr yn cael ei arddangos i'r cyhoedd. Bydd cyfle hefyd i archebu ymweliadau preifat am awr i werthfawrogi'r cloc heb unrhyw ymyriadau.
