Aberystwyth Arts Centre: Aberystwyth Choral Society - 8pm, Saturday 28 April

Aberystwyth Arts Centre: Aberystwyth Choral Society - 8pm, Saturday 28 April On Saturday 28 April Aberystwyth’s large and thriving Choral Society comes together with its regular professional orchestra, Sinfonia Cambrensis, and four international soloists, under the baton of David Russell Hulme, to perform Antonin Dvorak’s powerful and richly romantic masterpiece, Stabat Mater and the Serenade to Music by Vaughn Williams.

A favourite with the choir, the Stabat Mater is a deeply moving work, fired by the composer’s personal loss as he coped with the death of his three young children. Dvorak channelled his grief into a large-scale setting of the 13th-century poem about Mary’s anguish at the death of her Son. Affecting in its simplicity, sincerity and heartfelt compassion, this is choral music that has everything – fine solo sections, wonderfully varied choral writing and masterly orchestration.

The Serenade to Music is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful settings of Shakespeare and a perfect distillation of the genius of Ralph Vaughan Williams. He composed his setting of lines from The Merchant of Venice for the 50th anniversary, in 1938, of Sir Henry Wood’s first appearance as a conductor.

The choral society will be joined by soloists: Sally Harrison, Angharad Lyddon, David Webb and Siôn Goronwy. Sally Harrison Soprano is well known to Aberystwyth audiences, singing most recently with the choir in Handel’s Messiah in 2015. Angharad Lyddon Mezzo-soprano is originally from Wrexham and in June will compete to represent Wales at the 2019 Cardiff Singer of the World. David Webb Tenor is a Harewood Artist at English National Opera, performing recently both at ENO and Glyndebourne. Siôn Goronwy Bass studied at Aberystwyth University, and in 2017 and 2018 sang in Mid Wales Opera performances in Aberystwyth.

This April’s concert is dedicated to the memory of Geraint John, the founder conductor of Aberystwyth Choral Society 1970-2002, who died in January 2018.

The choir has been delighted in recent weeks that Catrin Finch, internationally-acclaimed harpist and former member of the Choral Society, has agreed to become its new President following the death in 2017 of longstanding member and President Daryl Griffiths.

The Choral Society is a non-audition community choir with more than 70 members drawn mostly from around Aberystwyth but also from as far afield as Barmouth and Rhayader. New members are always welcome – if you would like to join the choir when it starts rehearsals again in September, please contact Chair June Wilson on 07852 188184 or
