Friday 17 August The Village Show Gets a Makeover

A popular local LGBT+ arts night will entertain its audience under canvas for the first time this summer, at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

‘The Aberration Alternative Village Show’ on the evening of 17 August will fuse the best elements of circus, cabaret and the good old-fashioned village show. It will bring a fresh twist to the kind of horticultural and cake contests more usually seen in marquees around Wales.

It’s all part of Aberration on Tour, funded by a grant from the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government and National Lottery.

Helen Sandler is the chair of SpringOut, a small local events company that co-organises Aberration. She says: ‘We were delighted to be awarded a grant to take Aberration around Wales. Aberystwyth Arts Centre is our home ground so this is going to be the flagship event. We can’t wait to put on a fabulous show for our local audience.’

As part of the evening, artist Andrew Logan will be talking to Helen onstage about his extraordinary life. The band Quercus Burlesque will end the evening with their stomping melodies, and there are plenty of surprises in store in between.

Co-organiser Ruth Fowler of Enfys Aber (Aberystwyth University’s LGBT+ staff network) says: ‘It’s great we can do something new this summer. Everyone is welcome at our events and over the past few years we’ve seen how people from all backgrounds can get together and enjoy work by lesbian, gay, bi and trans performers, as well as making new friends.’

In addition to the main grant, the tour has received funding from Aberystwyth University and Over the Rainbow guesthouse.

Aberration Alternative Village Show takes place in the Summer House tent at Aberystwyth Arts Centre at 8pm on Friday 17 August, but there will be sideshows and judging from 7.30, so arrive early to join in the fun. Tickets are on sale now from the Arts Centre at £12 (£10 concessions).
