ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE Castaway Community Theatre Alfie 7:45pm Friday 24 August 2:30pm and 7:45pm Saturday 25 August |
What's is all about? Alfie!Alfie, the serial womanizer and liar of 1960s cinema, will be familiar to audiences as being the title character of the film that made Michael Caine into a household name. Alfie, carefree, charming and utterly without remorse would be identified today as a psychopath. However, his superfical charm makes him into an extremely watchable yet dangerous anti-hero. It is for this reason that Bill Naughton's original play, based on the novel of the same name will be Castaway Community Theatre's summer show. Directed by Lindsay Blumfield, the play presents a tale of narcissism and self-regard that continues to resonate in a society where women in their millions have hashtaged #metoo. Yet, the women in the play - fun-loving Siddie (Denise Williams, motherly Gilda (Sarah Oakes), stoical Lily (Katrina Williams), luxuriant Ruby (Lynne Casey), independent Annie (Anna Beyer) and the no-nonsense doctor (Jacqui Kenton), are strong, and learn to build on their own resilience and courage. Alfie may be charming, but his power to disarm cannot last. The role of Alfie is shared between Darren O'Connell and Tim-Brendler-Spaeth. Director Lindsay Blumfield explains: 'Doubling the characters adds a new perspective to the play. Every time Alfie learns something of the world, you think- hope that he will become a better person, but the older Alfie, narrating his life makes you realise that he never learns - he never ever learns. Tickets £12. Tickets are available from the Arts Centre Box Office on 01970 62 32 32 or online at www.aberystwythartscentre.co.uk |
