Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room’s Autumn season continues with Cardiff Boy
Cardiff’s pub theatre The Other Room, located in Porter’s and winner of The Stage’s Fringe Theatre of the Year Award 2016, continues its Autumn/Winter 2018 season with play Cardiff Boy, written by Keeping Faith and Hinterland script editor Kevin Jones.

Cardiff Boy, running Tuesday 30 October – Sunday 11 November, was originally presented by Chippy Lane productions at their 'Chippy and Scratch' Night, where it was selected as overall winner. It is a dynamic one-man show soundtracked by a ‘90s mix tape of indie belters and set in Llanederyn, Cardiff in the ‘90s. A study of male friendship, the love and the violence, the codes, the loyalties and rituals, Cardiff Boy follows a group of young lads, desperate to make an impression in an ever-changing city.

Cardiff Boy is a production from Red Oak Theatre, formed by Director Matthew Holmquist (also Associate Director of The Other Room) and Designer April Dalton, to make work inspired formally by design as well as provide opportunities for emerging directors and designers. Matthew, who is directing the piece, comments:

“The music we listen to defines us as we grow up. Cardiff Boy is a 90s mixtape, a working-class boy’s collection of thoughts, feelings and experiences he wants to share with us, through belting 90s tracks. I have always been fascinated with how music can work with and in contrast to live theatre. Having worked in both opera and theatre, I fully believe in the power of music and Kevin Jones’ new play certainly shares that sentiment.”

The production uses the same actor from the original scratch production – Jack Hammett, who was most recently in Dirty Protest’s Lightspeed from Pembroke Dock and National Theatre Wales’s As Long as the Heart Beats.
