New Minister pledges support for Arts Council of Wales

Alun Pugh AM the newly appointed Minister for Culture, the Welsh Language and Sport will make his first speech in his new role at the "Arts at the Heart" Conference on Monday 19th May.

Speaking of the vital role of ACW to the arts sector he said: "The Arts Council of Wales has played a significant role in supporting and expanding the arts sector in Wales. There are clear challenges across all art forms and the Welsh Assembly Government has already committed an annual budget in excess of £22 million to The Arts Council of Wales to help meet those challenges. More importantly we see the development of a strong and productive relationship with the Council as a key way of ensuring that the arts continue to make a vital contribution to the life and economy of Wales.

"I also recognise ACW's own commitment to meet head on their own challenges, and through regonalisation to make sure that their services are readily available in all parts of Wales. I endorse their endeavours to address issues such as engaging young people in the arts within a culture of equal opportunity and ensuring that the sector develops the skills it needs though access to appropriate professional development and training. The "Arts at the Heart" conference, with its emphasis on open debate and consultation, together with ACW's commitment to research and evaluation will go a long way to laying the foundation for a fruitful partnership with the new Welsh Assembly Government."

Peter Tyndall Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Wales, in advance of the conference said, "We are pleased that the Minister can be present at the conference and we warmly welcome him to the Arts Sector. We look forward to a continued cooperative relationship."
