Welsh National Opera serves up a tasty new production of Don Pasquale

Welsh National Opera serves up a tasty new production of Don Pasquale • A new interpretation of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale to tour to smaller stages across Wales and England set in doner kebab van
• New translation by award-winning director Daisy Evans
• Andrew Shore stars as Don Pasquale with WNO Associate Artist Harriet Eyley as Norina
WNO’s upcoming summer tour is a dazzling new production of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. The exploits of a contemporary Don Pasquale take to the road in this riotous new staging of the classic comic opera from May 25 to July 13. Set in and around Pasquale’s doner kebab van, it’s the story of an old bachelor’s romantic delusions and the young lovers who outwit him.

Driving Don Pasquale into the 21st Century
Director Daisy Evans, musical director Stephen Higgins and designer Loren Elstein have ripped up the rule book and changed the design, narrative and libretto to bring Donizetti’s opera bang up to date for a completely new audience as well as those who may already know and love the work. Elstein has created a witty set which transports you to downtown Cardiff and positions the piece very firmly in the present day.
Don Pasquale features a small cast and an on-stage orchestra creating an intimate, operatic experience where the audience is on the very edge of the action, giving a new perspective on this Donizetti classic which is suitable for all ages.

The uproarious new story
This contemporary production tells the story of a self-important man and the young sweethearts who outsmart him in this version for 2019. Don Pasquale (Andrew Shore) is the larger-than-life self-made patriarch who came to Cardiff in the 1970s to seek his fortune. He buys a kebab van and tenaciously builds his empire up, it now does a roaring trade on a Friday night. His nephew Ernesto (Nico Darmanin), a wannabe singer/songwriter, has come to stay with him. But Don Pasquale doesn’t think much of this poetry-writing millennial who doesn’t pull his weight. Pasquale doesn’t want to hand his kebab van over to his nephew when he dies, and decides to get married and produce heirs in order to cut his nephew out completely.
Pasquale’s quest to find a wife shocks Ernesto into action, and he and his vegan girlfriend Norina (Harriet Eyley) and local geezer Malatesta (Quirijn De Lang) conspire to trick the older man, to secure their future and drag him into the 21st Century.

Taking the van on tour
Following on from the success of Elena Langer’s Rhondda Rips It Up! in 2018, this comic opera will tour to mid-scale venues across Wales and England. The company continues its commitment to reach a wide range of audiences with a varied operatic repertoire, bringing opera to towns and cities with smaller theatres not able to accommodate the full-scale company. This is Don Pasquale like you’ve never seen or heard before.

Director and librettist Daisy Evans says “This Don Pasquale is fresh, contemporary and unique. It has been reimagined for a modern audience, and sees current issues driving this classic comedy. Pasquale is proud of his kebab van and the years of service he has provided to late night revellers in Cardiff, but he's grown mean-minded and scared of modernisation. His nephew Ernesto and his girlfriend Norina stand for the future - calling for less plastic use, eco-conscious dining and stripped back design. The two sides are pitted against each other in a comedy that is bound to have you laughing as well as thinking”
Cynhyrchiad newydd bendigedig Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru o Don Pasquale

• Dehongliad newydd o Don Pasquale gan Donizetti wedi'i leoli mewn fan cebab i fynd ar daith i lwyfannau llai ledled Cymru a Lloegr
• Cyfieithiad newydd gan y cyfarwyddwr llwyddiannus Daisy Evans
• Andrew Shore fydd yn serennu fel Don Pasquale ac Artist Cyswllt WNO Harriet Eyley fydd yn chwarae rhan Norina.
Taith haf WNO eleni yw cynhyrchiad newydd trawiadol o Don Pasquale gan Donizetti. Bydd campau'r Don Pasquale cyfoes yn mynd ar daith yn y llwyfaniad newydd hwn o'r opera gomig glasurol rhwng Mai 25 a Gorffennaf 13. Wedi'i gosod yn ac o gwmpas fan cebab Pasquale, mae'n stori am freuddwydion rhamantus hen lanc a'r cariadon ifanc sy'n ei dwyllo.

Don Pasquale y 21ain Ganrif
Mae'r cyfarwyddwr Daisy Evans, y cyfarwyddwr cerdd Stephen Higgins a'r dylunydd Loren Elstein wedi rhwygo'r llyfr rheolau ac wedi newid y dyluniad, y naratif a'r libreto i ddiweddaru opera Donizetti i gynulleidfa hollol newydd yn ogystal â'r rhai sydd eisoes yn gyfarwydd â'r gwaith. Mae Elstein wedi creu set ffraeth sy'n eich cludo i ganol Caerdydd ac mae'n gosod y darn yn gadarn iawn yn y presennol.
Mae Don Pasquale yn cynnwys cast bach a cherddorfa ar y llwyfan sy'n creu profiad operatig agos, lle mae'r gynulleidfa reit o flaen yr holl ddigwyddiadau, sy'n rhoi persbectif newydd ar y clasur hwn gan Donizetti, sy'n addas ar gyfer pob oedran.

Y stori newydd anfarwol o ddigrif
Mae'r cynhyrchiad cyfoes hwn yn adrodd hanes dyn hunanbwysig a'r cariadon ifanc sy'n glyfrach nag ef yn y fersiwn hon ar gyfer 2019. Don Pasquale (Andrew Shore) yw'r patriarch hunanddyrchafedig a ddaeth i Gaerdydd yn y 1970au i wneud ei ffortiwn. Mae'n prynu fan cebab ac yn adeiladu ei ymerodraeth a bellach yn denu torf bob nos Wener. Mae ei nai Ernesto (Nico Darmanin), sydd eisiau bod yn ganwr/cyfansoddwr, wedi dod i aros. Ond, nid yw Don Pasquale yn or-hoff o'r llanc ifanc sy'n hoffi ysgrifennu barddoniaeth ac yn gwrthod tynnu ei bwysau i helpu. Nid yw Pasquale eisiau rhoi ei fan cebab i'w nai ar ôl iddo farw, ac felly mae'n penderfynu priodi a chael plant ei hun ac amddifadu ei nai yn llwyr.
Mae penderfyniad Pasquale i chwilio am wraig yn sioc fawr i Ernesto, ac mae ef a'i gariad Norina (Harriet Eyley) sy'n figan a Malatesta (Quirijn De Lang) yn cynllwynio i dwyllo'r dyn hŷn, i sicrhau eu dyfodol nhw a'i lusgo ef i'r 21ain Ganrif.

Mynd â'r fan ar daith
Yn dilyn llwyddiant Rhondda Rips It Up! gan Elena Langer yn 2018, bydd yr opera gomig hon yn teithio i ganolfannau canolig eu maint ledled Cymru a Lloegr. Mae'r cwmni'n parhau â'i ymrwymiad i gyrraedd ystod eang o gynulleidfaoedd gyda repertoire operatig amrywiol, gan ddod ag opera i drefi a dinasoedd gyda theatrau llai sydd ddim hefo digon o le i'r cwmni llawn. Dyma Don Pasquale fel nad ydych erioed wedi'i weld o'r blaen.

Dywedodd y cyfarwyddwr a'r libretydd Daisy Evans "Mae'r Don Pasquale yma yn ffres, yn gyfoes ac yn unigryw. Mae wedi cael ei ail-ddychmygu ar gyfer cynulleidfa fodern ac mae'r comedi glasurol yn cael ei gyrru gan faterion cyfoes. Mae Pasquale yn falch o'i fan cebab a'r blynyddoedd o wasanaeth y mae wedi ei roi i bartiwyr hwyr y nos yng Nghaerdydd, ond mae wedi mynd yn grintachlyd ac yn ofni moderneiddio. Cynrychiola ei nai Ernesto a'i gariad Norina y dyfodol - maent yn galw am ddefnyddio llai o blastig, bwyta eco-ymwybodol a dylunio mwy syml. Mae'r ddwy ochr yn cystadlu yn erbyn ei gilydd mewn comedi sy'n siŵr o'ch gwneud i chi chwerthin yn ogystal â meddwl"
